Pillow Talk follows Rosie, a goofy woman recovering from a breakup with a man who hates fun. This short film explores how it feels to be the last single friend, marooned in the modern dating scene with nowhere to turn but your living room.

Mission Statement

We want to make a film that says “you’re allowed to exist exactly as you are” and “you know, in the right light your couch is actually kinda hot.” Bringing a world of beautiful absurdity close to home, it'll make you laugh, make you say “wait what?” and make you giggle every time you sit on a couch.

The Story

Pillow Talk is a short film about a lonely woman who falls in love with her couch after kissing it into life.

Hello! Tina here, the director / writer of Pillow Talk. Thank you for clicking the link for our fundraiser and letting your curiosity get the best of you!

I wrote this script 5 years ago, when I turned 32 and it felt like every friend in my life had found their romantic partner and was starting a new chapter of life without me.

While filming a comedy video, I made up a character who was dating her couch, Thomas. So pleased with the idea, I began to ponder if one could actually fall in love with their couch. He'd be a great listener, cuddler, and daily companion-- so many boxes would be ticked!

Here's 30 seconds from the original video that inspired Thomas:

Here's 30 seconds of plant chats from the same comedy sketch:

After writing the script, I told myself, "One day I'll make this!!"...and then I didn't. But after years of carrying this story around inside me, I began to feel like I was pregnant with it and way past my due date. So I screamed, "IT'S TIME TO POP THIS FILM BABY OUT!" So here we are-- in the pre-production car on the way to the Short Film Birthing Center, and we would love your help paying for the gas that's gonna get us there :)

I've gathered a group of the most talented and weirdest filmmaking friends that I could find (please read about them in the TEAM section). They have all agreed to join me on this movie-making journey and are willing to help me frankenstein a couch into life (moving mouth and eyes included)! With their amazing skills, we're going to film this baby in mid-August.

Pillow Talk will have a style between Amelie and Pee-Wee's PlayHouse with bright colors and bright characters.

A couch boyfriend needs to move and we need to pay people to move its mouth and eyes while filming!

I'd love you all to be a part of this film and hugely appreciate any amount of support you can give! I can't wait for you to see Pillow Talk!!

Love,

Tina and the Pillow Talk Team

About This Team

Tina Detchon (Director / Writer / Producer) is a writer/director/actor who spends way too much time talking to the plants and objects in her home. She's directed short films and sketches since graduating from Syracuse and has worked in TV and Commercial production since 2009 (HBO, Nickelodeon, Toyota, Walmart, Burger King). She spent a few years getting a Masters in Education and used it to teach in as many cool countries she could find. Tina currently performs improv every Wednesday at the Magnet Theater in NYC, while also working in Post Production on Bobby Flay's "Triple Threat". She's a big fan of the gray couch she's decorated with a bear shaped pillow and different blankets based on the season.

Rob Bevis (Director of Photography) is a cinematographer based in New York City. He grew up in rural south Georgia surrounded by decaying tobacco barns, freshwater bass ponds, and his mother's watercolor paintings before moving to New York and getting his start in the electric department on features and television. Recent work includes Weapons and Their Names (Sundance Film Festival, 2023), Didn’t Think I’d See You Here (Sundance Film Festival, 2024), and the feature film Deepfake, a recipient of the Panavision NFP Grant, scheduled to release in late-2024. Rob has been a longtime fan of various couches and sofas going back to his youth, most notably as of late: his brother’s L-shaped couch in Jacksonville, Florida which is probably the most comfortable couch in the western hemisphere.

Maddie Eiden (Producer / Actor) is a UX Designer based in Brooklyn, NY. Maddie acted and sang in musical theater productions from elementary school through high school until she moved to Seattle to study design. For the past two years Maddie has taken several improv classes through the Magnet Theater in New York. Maddie credits Tina with her newfound love of improv and for encouraging her to make the move to New York. Tina famously said, “You seem like you’d be really into improv. Also, you should move to New York.” Maddie loves her half sofa/ chaise because it's perfect for holding her hand shaped pillows and art books.

Koren Harpaz (Lead Fabricator and Puppeteer) is a multidisciplinary freelance artist with a focus in handcrafted sculpture and stop-motion animation. He specializes in designing, constructing, and animating sets, props and puppets for stop-motion and live-action puppetry. He has worked for numerous production companies including Hornet, Buck, Mighty Oak, Visual Country, McCann, Mosomos, with projects for Amazon, USPS, Dunkin’, Casper, Jose Cuervo, Bergdorf Goodman, Tom Petty, and the NY Lottery. He tolerates his thrifted olive green pullout couch.

Eugene Kolb (Creative Producer) is a Ukrainian-born-and-raised director, animator, and producer. His short films have screened at dozens of film festivals, including the Tribeca Film Festival and AFI Fest; have been featured on Short of the Week, and have received Vimeo Staff Picks. He loves his worn gray IKEA couch.

Courtney Hall (Co-Editor / DIT) is a Brooklyn based editor that has been working in post production for 7 years. She has worked on a variety of TV shows including Beat Bobby Flay, Bobby's Triple Threat, and Teen Mom OG, as well as a feature film The Truth in Advertising. She is passionate about editing and loves working in both the technical and creative sides of post production. She and her dog Lucy love their big cozy couch.
