The Story
In this modern world, some stuff is cool. Some stuff is truly dark. Most of the time it's in between.
This project is a border story about what it's like to move in that in-between.
Set in both Tijuana and San Diego, Pinche Nerdo is a comedy short about a young father who pursues his dream of being a comic book artist at the biggest comic book festival in the world. While promoting his work in and amongst the crowds, he meets someone who he believes can change his life forever.
This film is shot in verité docufiction style, with scenes set at the San Ysidro Border and the streets outside of the "Comic Book CONvention." Blending scripted scenes with improv and actors with non-actors the film works to blur the lines between reality and fiction.
Hi! Jacob here. PInche Nerdo is a project that has been in the works for a long time.
I wrote this story about 4+ years ago and I've been hammering away at figuring out how to make it.
After years of starting and stopping, this past summer, through the amazing work of friends and collaborators, we were actually able to film the project and execute on our vision.
I've dedicated an immense amount of personal time and funds to make this a reality.
This is a film about where we live. It's about the infrastructure and events and the people who have to deal with them. It's built out of years of observations in this weird, border zone and I'm excited for you all to see it.
It's soooooo close to being finished and that's where you come in.
Filmmaking is expensive. Like... really expensive. Even when it's a passion project, it's work and I want my collaborators to be paid.
WE MUST HIT 80% OF OUR GOAL IN ORDER TO BE GREEN LIT AKA RECEIVING ANY FUNDS
This film is at 80%. It's shot and edited, but now it's that final 20% we really have to lock-in and make sure we don't fumble in the endzone.
That's why we need you.
Our goal for crowdfunding is $8,000. This is what that amount will go towards:
- Sound Mix + Mastering
- Color Correction
- Animation
- Original Score
- Collaborator Reimbursement
- Festival Fees
By donating to our project you'll help us to tell this story of our strange time and support us on our filmmaking journey.
Every follower, re-share, tweet, email, and text message means SO much and helps get us that much closer to hitting our goal.

Animator
Costs $1,800
This will help to pay an animator to bring to life some vital moments in our film.
Sound Mix and Master
Costs $3,000
We want to be able to hire a professional sound engineer to handle the audio mix and master to guarantee high levels of audio fidelity.
Color Grading
Costs $600
This will allow a professional colorist to help make every image as unified and strong as possible.
Composer
Costs $1,000
We want to enlist the skills of local San Diego musician and composer Zane Shrem-Besnoy to compose an original score for the short film.
Festival Fees
Costs $600
We're really proud of this film and want to be able to show it in as many places as we can and every festival requires a fee to submit.
Deferred Payment
Costs $1,000
We have some collaborators who offered their services for a CRAZY unsustainable rate. It's nice but messed up and this is to remedy that.
