Inspired by the Greek story "The Abduction of Persephone" Pomegranate Poison adapts Persephone's experience to a modern world setting. Serving as a reclamation of Persephone's story, this film compares Persephone eating pomegranate seeds to getting drugged at a bar.

Mission Statement

The fear of being drugged, sexually harassed, and assaulted is instilled in the minds of a majority of women. Seeing my closest friends experience one of my largest fears reminded me of how these occurrences are more than just stories. Pomegranate Poison lets women take control of the narrative.

The Story

STORY

Kore has been tricked by men before and decides to take matters into her own hands. Based off the Greek Story "The Abduction of Persephone", Pomegranate Poison serves as a reclamation of Persephone's story and provides inspiration to other assault and harassment victims and survivors to do the same. This version of Persephone's story compares the pomegranate seeds to the date rape drug to tie her story to the modern world. However, rather than the focus being on the others around her making the decisions, the story is centered on Kore as she takes a similar path to Persephone and writes a new ending.

OUR INSPIRATION

From an early age, the fear of being drugged, sexually harassed, and assaulted is instilled in the minds of a majority of women. It becomes an everyday worry that haunts women whenever they go out alone. Myself, my friends, and my family members have been subject to sexual harassment and assault. While lucky enough myself to have never been roofied, I know others who have. Seeing my closest friends experience one of my largest fears reminded me of how these occurrences are more than just stories. Being drugged, sexually harassed, and/or sexually assaulted are a reality for women that we need to create an awareness for. This short film will help women with this experience to be seen as well as educate on rape culture and sexual violence itself.

This isn't a new phenomenon either. I drew parallels between this story and one from ancient years, the Greek Story of Peresphone. Persephone is kidnapped by Hades against her will and taken to the Underworld. There she is tricked into consuming pomegranate seeds which condemn her to stay in hell for a portion of the year. These pomegranate seeds are what reminded me of being roofied and from developing this connection, "Pomegranate Poison" was born.
