The Story

What's in your head?
Predisposition is a psychological horror film about a young woman struggling with the specter of hereditary mental illness.
The Story
The film centers around the experience of being a young woman trying to make it as a musician after graduating college. Elena, our protagonist, works a minimum wage job by day and writes music with her childhood best friend, Moss, by night. After having a strange out-of-body experience, her anxiety around being predisposed to schizophrenia spirals out of control. Visions of an ancestor, who she believes to have had schizophrenia, haunts her dreams and soon begins to bleed into her everyday life. The stigma surrounding mental health disorders hangs over her head, forcing her to self-isolate despite Moss's attempts to help her. With an important gig coming up that could jumpstart her music career and get her out of employment limbo, Elena must confront her debilitating fears to find comfort - but not a cure - in music.

Inspiration and Mission
I was inspired to write this film by the world of women- and queer-made horror films. Horror as a genre feels like a space for all the weird shit that we think about and never speak about. Even though it’s historically been dominated by white men, like the rest of the film industry, horror has been slowly co-opted by queer, female and non-white filmmakers in incredibly creative ways. This film is about shedding light on mental illness as well as depicting the experiences of a young woman through a realist lens. Mental illness, especially among the queer community, is drastically underrepresented in the film industry. This film tells an all-too-common story about hereditary mental illness that has been hidden by stigma for too long.
Our team is comprised of talented and passionate BFA students from Temple University. Most of our crew department heads are women, and one of our goals is to amplify the amount of women and AFAB stories in the film industry. Below are some BTS photos from our test shoot in October of our team at work! This film has many ambitious sets, special effects and camera movements, but every member of our crew is dedicated to make our vision a reality.

Our Process
After completing a test shoot in October 2023, we are moving quickly towards Principal Photography in mid-December. Your donation of any amount will help to move us closer to our goal of creating an elevated horror film that touches on delicate themes. The post-production process will last three months and will be a detailed process that will include special effects and extensive sound design. The film will be completed in April 2024, and will be premiered at the Temple University BFA showcase, after which it will enter a competitive festival run for a year. In late 2024, "Predisposition" will be available for you to stream on Youtube and Vimeo!
If we are lucky enough to surpass our fundraising goal, we will be able to put more money into paying our incredible crew, elevating our planned special effects and entering the film into more festivals. To help us reach our goal, we would appreciate it if you shared this project with your friends and family! You can follow our progress @predispositionfilm on Instagram and contact us at [email protected] with any inquiries or messages.
