Can Team RAMBOAT, a group of underfunded yet resourceful mechanical engineering students, rise to the challenge of designing and building a high-performance river jet boat that can skim over as little as 3 inches of water at speeds exceeding 100 mph?

Mission Statement

The mission is to tell the best engineering story that might ever have been told! The director resonates with these students as they are francophone, are engineers undertaking a final year design project at University and are coming to his home community to compete in the World Championships.

The Story

THE DREAM

Team RAMBOAT has spent the last couple years conceptualizing, designing and building a better River Jet Boat as part of their capstone university project. They've promised their sponsors and supporting jet boat community that they would race their creation at the 2025 World River Jet Boat Championships in the Peace River region which is 4200km away, accross the country!

L'Université de Sherbrooke, has a reputation of having some of the most extravagant capstone projects in Canada, if not the World! From rockets to all electric race cars, these projects attract students from all over.

THE DOCUMENTARY

Réjean Lavoie from Northern Upshots has captured a bulk of footage from initiation of the project, construction of the aluminum hull, assembly of the parts with the GM LS3 engine at the heart of the creation, presentation at the Mega Awesome Expo for final review, starting the motor for the first time and first water trials. These film production costs are not part of this request. Réjean Lavoie, from Northern Upshots, has taken on directing a documentary on this story and every step until this point has been filmed and categorized. Unfortunately, if the students are unable to attend the race due to their limited funds, the exciting racing conclusion of the story will never be told or produced.THIS REQUEST IS TO ASSIST THE TEAM TO MAKE IT TO ALBERTA AND PARTICIPATE IN THE RACE to allow the rest of the story to be told. Without this conclusion, the story is "empty."

PRODUCTION, PART 2

An important part of finishing the documentary is coming to and participating in the race. This group of young engineers are now graduated, in their mid-twenties and also dreaming of starting their careers, their homes and their families. 5 of the 7 are leaning towards not racing to focus these other priorities. Leaving an extra heavy burden on the 2 remaining team members, Félix Beaudoin and Jeremy Ducharme, who want to be true to their word and realize their full dream of taking their creation on its first epic race.

The boat build budget was in the $80,000 range. Industry sponsors we sought and found but the students still had to tap in further into their student loans to get it done. Now a further $30,000 is estimated to be needed to ready the boat for racing, get to the race and make it through the grueling 10-day marathon. A list of items totalling $14,000 of that is on their Seed & Spark wishlist.

Less than 80 days to go!

The students have done initial testing to verify the boat is functional but now need to do final tweaks to assure it is race worthy. We are now within 100 days of the initial race they intend to compete in, the 2025 Jet Boat World Championships. This race is taking place 4200 km from their headquarters in Sherbrooke, Quebec, in an northern remote area known as the Peace Country that straddles both provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.

Please consider assisting us to compete in this our dream race.

About This Team

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

Team RAMBOAT's story might just be the greatest engineering tale ever told!

As a mechanical engineer, I was inspired by a group of students from Sherbrooke University in Quebec who sought a bold challenge for their fourth-year design project. They reached out to learn more about the Jet Boat race in my hometown of Peace River, Alberta, an event I’ve been capturing content for over the past three years.

After connecting with Team RAMBOAT through video calls and visiting their campus, I felt compelled to tell their story.  It is one of dreaming big, facing reality, overcoming challenges and demonstrating unwavering determination.
