Mission Statement

As we faced our own challenges during the pandemic, we recognized the dangers of leaving emotions unspoken. In tough times, silence creates a void where support should be, leading to devastating fallout. Remnants aims to highlight the importance of fostering vulnerable communication among friends.

The Story

'Remnants' is an intimate short film that explores the unspoken struggles many men face when dealing with emotional pain. Set against the backdrop of a secluded lake house, the story follows two friends as they confront the emotional aftermath of a mutual friend’s death. In a weekend spent clearing out the house, they are forced to reckon with their own assumptions, beliefs, and hidden feelings.

This film, featuring Alex Grubbs and Sean McIntyre, highlights a critical, often overlooked truth: men are conditioned to bottle up their emotions, to “stay strong” in the face of struggle, but that silence comes at a cost. 'Remnants' shines a light on this behavior and its consequences, offering a space to reflect on how we approach our friendships and mental health.

'Remnants' began as an exploration of the relationships we forge in our lives and how they shift, deepen, or unravel, even with the best of intentions. On the surface, it’s the story of two men facing the loss of a mutual friend, but beneath that, it’s about the weight of the unspoken. These characters confront the gaps in their friendship, lingering misunderstandings, and unsaid truths that quietly shape who they are to each other.

As a filmmaker, I’m drawn to the spaces in between—the pauses, hesitations, and small gestures that reveal unspoken feelings. In our society, especially among men, emotional expression is often stifled or only surfaces in moments of crisis. With 'Remnants,' I wanted to offer a lens into this dynamic, exploring how friendship can be both a shelter and a place of conflict and vulnerability. Amid the boxes and belongings of their late friend, these characters have an opportunity to find deeper understanding, though taking that next step is hard.

The film’s visual language is grounded, with natural light and intimate framing inviting the audience into this weekend of reckoning. Nature, particularly water, serves as a backdrop, a reminder of both fluidity and the inevitable passage of time. There’s a sense of negative space—a third, silent character in the film—representing what’s left behind. In making 'Remnants,' my hope is that viewers leave with curiosity about themselves and their relationships and perhaps ask themselves: how do I want to show up for my people?
