It can seem like taking some extreme action is the only option available to us when we're confronted with great tragedy. "Repercussion(s)" explores what it means to take these measures and the consequences that may stem from them.

Mission Statement

We can never know exactly how a single decision is going to impact the rest of our lives or the lives of others -- especially of those we love. I aim to bring attention to and deeper scrutiny of loss, grief, and nostalgia, and our most human reactions to these emotions.

The Story

The Story

Storyboard by Ryn Wright

“Repercussion(s)” begins inside a perfect memory. Jessie and her Daddy run through a park together, gleeful and happy, just as childhood should be.

But a darker reality soon reveals itself. Years after this beautiful moment, Jessie is missing and her Daddy has taken it upon himself to determine what happened to her -- and to enact revenge.

We'll watch as Jessie's Daddy grapples with a life altering decision to end the life of the man he believes to be responsible for her disappearance. A decision to rejoin her in what he believes to be the only way he can. What will Jessie's Daddy miss out on because of these fateful actions?

Why This Story

When I first saw the image in my head of a man keeping vigil by a window, I wrote a handful of pages, typed “The End” and was done with it. But the pages I wrote kept gnawing at me. This story wouldn’t keep quiet in the drawer with all the other half-finished words I’ve written. Over six years, I tinkered with this script - first in my head, then through discussion with other creatives, and finally on the page.

The theme of consequences and the panoply of “other” outcomes would not let me rest. When I finally sat down to revise this script I realized what I was trying to say all along: that you never know exactly how a single decision is going to impact the rest of your life -- or the lives of the people you love.

This script's structure intentionally contrasts a happy memory of a father and his daughter with the awful reality of loss. By introducing a time looping element, audiences will explore the possible outcomes of an enormous decision made rashly.

I think it comes across on the page, but now I have the opportunity to put my written vision to the test and allow a theatrical audience to decide for themselves: What is the best choice? Is there one at all?

Why Now

There is no denying that there is a great deal of violence in the world. Some of it is entirely unjustifiable and heinous, but some --depending on who you ask -- seems to be justifiable or explained away as "deserved."

The story of Jessie's Daddy and the actions he takes due to his personal convictions and beliefs explore the themes of justified and unjustified violence, of revenge, and of the consequences of extreme actions. It will ignite in audiences a debate that can and should be at the forefront: is there ever a time to take a life?

Why Me

My name is Kelsey Nerrie. I'm a writer, reader, film lover, wife, and mother. But I was not a mother when I first wrote this script. Since I first jotted this idea down, I have experiences pregnancy, post-partum, and motherhood. The cliché is that the experience changes you, and of course, it does. It brought me a new understanding of the previously melodramatic sentiment, "I'd do anything for you." But it presents thoughts and feelings that are not discussed as well: what might the consequences be if you actually do anything for them?

Through this script and short film, I explore these heart-bursting feelings head-on.

Ultimately...

The goal of "Repercussion(s)" is to ask questions: Is going to the extreme ever acceptable? Can we ever really know where our choices will lead us? And can we live with the consequences, whatever they may be?

Let’s explore the potential outcomes together.

About This Team

Nearly half of the team I've assembled for this project I met on set of another short film production in Richmond, Virginia ("We'll Still Be Here" dir. Séyla Hossaini). I had the most fun ever in my years of film experience on that project. It ran smoothly and resulted in a truly beautiful film, all thanks to the people involved. The experience reignited my passion for this artform.

When I approached each of these filmmakers about my own project -- nervously! -- I was completely stunned and humbled that they said yes without hesitation. Not only are these folks brilliant and passionate about what they do, they are some of the nicest and coolest people! Their faith in my project gives me such joy and, frankly, a bit of an ego boost.

This team brings a great deal of expertise but most of all the folks assembled bring a passion for storytelling, for collaboration, and for making something truly amazing that will spark conversation and introspection.
