Mission Statement

Robin Hood Realty presents a satirical commentary on gentrification in Washington D.C. while representing the people here that are struggling to stay in a changing city. The film aims to bear witness to these real world issues but also remind us to find humor in the face of difficult times.

The Story

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Robin Hood Realty is a buddy comedy about two friends struggling to afford to live in Washington D.C., who in a last-ditch effort to stay, decide to flip a house without actively gentrifying their neighborhood. This film explores the dynamics of a changing Washington D.C. through satire while honoring D.C.'s unique culture and people. The story combats anxieties and struggles over gentrification with comedy while also making sure to humanize the people at the center of the issue by taking cues from films such as Blindspotting, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and Do the Right Thing that have expertly tackled these issues.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR:

Robin Hood Realty is not just a project for my degree, it's a story that I've had in my mind for a long time having grown up in San Francisco as it has gentrified into the most expensive city in the United States. Now, living in D.C. and seeing a lot of similar struggles with rising costs of living, it felt like the right time and place to bring this project forward into production as a way to express my own experiences and fears around gentrification and to pay my respects to the city of Washington D.C. that has embraced me for the past four years. With this film you won't just be seeing my thesis or hearing my writing, I'm giving you a piece of who I am and how I see these kinds of difficult circumstances.

In the long term I'd like this film to speak to communities that are struggling with the effects of gentrification all over the country as an expression of their frustrations through comedy. Additionally, this short film serves as a proof of concept for a series that will continue to engage these issues with added depth and expanded stories. Every contribution however big or small will help us bring these ideas to life!

WHO'S THE TEAM?

This is a hard-hitting team filled with drive to get a story done. With our Director, Omar Hutchins, passion for filmmaking and love for communities under threat of gentrification from San Francisco to Washington, D.C, Robin Hood Realty made sense for his next project. Alongside him, Jaidah Sizer, also from Washington D.C. and our Executive Producer, produced D.C. films called, Uni, City Love, and a commercial for a well-known restaurant, Oohhs & Aahhs. Jaidah has seen Washington D.C. change since she was a little girl and wants to bring awareness to the dangers of gentrification. With her experience witnessing families being pushed out of cities where they can no longer afford, she is ready to full immerse herself into this project. To bring the final touches to this dream team is Kyla Jefferson, our Producer who wraps this short film all together. What drives Kyla is her passion for storytelling and her commitment to bring creative visions to life. She is dedicated to the challenge of transforming ideas into reality, always striving to ensure that each project reflects its true essence.

WHERE ARE WE IN THE PROCESS?

We plan to shoot in March of 2025. We are currently in pre-production, working to bring this film to life. We are locking down storyboards, locations, actors, and equipment. This process takes a lot of intentionality and focus. Nonetheless, we are excited to bring you a great film!

We are looking to raise funds for:

  • Production Design
  • Transportation
  • Equipment
  • Paying Our Actors
  • Meals/Catering
  • Locations
  • Film Festival Submissions

Funds raised past our initial goal will allow us to fairly compensate our crew, submit to more prestigious film festivals, and increase our overall production quality. Our ideal budget to fulfill all these goals would $12,000.

HOW ELSE CAN I SUPPORT THE FILM?

We understand that sometimes we are not in the space to financially support, and that's okay! You can still support us by following us on Instagram @robinhoodrealty.film and help spread the word about our Seed & Spark campaign. We look forward to bringing the world a film they will enjoy!
