Mission Statement

We believe the "sole brown girl" narrative is overdone. Many areas in modern America have large South Asian communities, yet media hasn't explored these settings. Through this world of college dance teams we want to showcase the South-Asian American identity.

The Story

RU Zinda is an NYU Tisch Intermediate TV Bootcamp Project.

We need your help to make our story a reality. With an ambitious project such as this we need the support from all of you to add in the production value, transportation, and food for our amazing cast and crew!

Synopsis

20- year old Aria has always been exceptional. Whether it was her pre-med classes or making her parents proud, she’s always striving to be on top. And to an Indian-American girl in New Jersey, dance was no exception. So for the last two years, Aria has been part of one of the top Bollywood dance teams in the competitive circuit, RU Nasha. In fact, she has a full-ride scholarship at Ridge University because of her dance skills. Aria’s college Bollywood dance team RU Nasha is the envy of every brown girl at Ridge University, NJ. They have placed at every big competition in the last 3 years. Getting in was basically like rushing a brown sorority. In the world of RU Zinda dance is war. Colleges from across the USA have teams each spending hundreds of hours preparing for the competitions. Aria is part of one of the best teams, RU Nasha. However, at a party Aria is falsely accused of leaking the mix by playing it out loud and dancing to it while a rival team was present. Never having given up on anything, and with her dance scholarship on the line, Aria must bring together a group of rejects to build a new dance team. As she pulls together what may be a hopeless team and prepares to face humiliation, Aria finds evidence that her best friend/roommate and boyfriend are the ones who got her kicked off the old team. As Aria navigates the cut-throat world of Bollywood Dance and college drama she must face who she is and what dance truly means to her.

Why Us?

Nandini Padmanabhan

Growing up in India, I’ve been a huge fan of Bollywood dance since I was a child. I’ve been attending dance classes since I was 10 and I continued to pursue that passion in college by joining a competitive dance team at NYU called Dillagi. Along with the fun and thrilling experience of being on stage, being on a team came with its drama and conflicts especially spending hours and hours together practicing every week. Going to competitions, sharing rooms with 7 people at a time, attending mixers, and practicing till 4 in the morning the day before the competition was an experience I’ve never had before. It was crazy to see a group of Indians in America take dance more seriously than I have ever seen in India. It was a really interesting and exhausting experience filled with the highs and lows of being a performer, especially in a team. I feel this experience could make for a great show.

As an Indian-American who’s grown up in Jersey my whole life and done Indian dance for 15 years, this community of South Asians and the world of RU ZINDA is my life. The competitive brown kids, secrets, and crazy dynamics of being a first-generation Indian in America are what I know best. As soon as I came to NYU, I was exposed to the world of DDN. There is an overdone narrative of sole brown girl amongst a predominately white crowd, but the reality is there are many large hotspots in America that consist of a majority of South Asians in the modern age. I believe this sort of community has yet to be explored within media and would bring up a unique setting that is immersed in culture rather than shying away from it.
