Sinopsis/Synopsis:
"Sabino” is a student short film about the melancholy of a man's life when he finds himself alone.
One day upon returning to his ranch in the Mexican countryside, an old man named Sabino loses his horse when it gets scared off by a snake. He tries to search for his it but is unsuccessful, therefore he locks himself in his house. Sabino's loneliness confronts him with the pain of his past: his repressed homosexuality and his memories. A call from death makes him feel vulnerable and creates an inner duel that results in his liberation, both internal and external.
This short film explores the semiotics of Mexican masculinity in its portrayal in the media, especially in the audiovisual content. Mexican machismo relies on homophobia. This project seeks to deconstruct the stereotypical male character through the nostalgia of a man who realizes his emptiness after losing his only company, a white horse.
Sabino frees himself from the prejudices that have held him back throughout his life. In his solitude he remembers and accepts the pain he caused José (a friend he was attracted to) in their youth. Sabino feels sorry for his past actions and in a sudden exploration of his vulnerability, he cries. After a moment of acceptance, a series of events unfold.
The setting of this short film is rural Mexico. It draws inspiration from the literary atmospheres of Juan Rulfo; the cinema of Arturo Ripstein and Jaime Humberto Hermosillo; my childhood growing up on the outskirts of Guanajuato; and the work of countless plastic artists whose main themes of representation is the typical Mexican countryside. This short film seeks to reverse the traditional elements of Mexico and its relationship homosexuality.
I am looking for humanity instead of fatalism, to connect throughout the short film with daily and human themes such as love, forgiveness, loneliness, companionship, and the intimacy of life. The message seeks to communicate the value of acceptance and self-love.
I seek to represent in the most honest, objective, and realistic way possible the portrait of an ordinary man. Unlike many of the contemporary stories that are being told by Mexican creators where the conflict is defined by drug trafficking, organized crime, or the violence that plagues the country; which creates an issue where strong and complicated topics are being exploited, romanticized, and overrepresented; Sabinos is seeking to grow from the everyday life. It is also trying to tell a different set of conflicts that are also an important part of the current Mexican discourse.
