The Story

Saving Buddy Charles follows two best friends the summer before college. As Clara and Sydney are gearing up to be separated in the fall, Clara discovers an illness relapse has given her only six months to live without a heart transplant. Keeping it a secret from Sydney, she distracts them both by proposing a road trip to Idaho to save Sydney’s pet lizard from her ex-boyfriend.
With Saving Buddy Charles, we want to capture that fleeting, electric energy of being young and invincible, even when faced with the ultimate vulnerability. This film blends humor and heartache in a way that feels raw and real. One moment, you're crying from laughter, and the next, you're laughing through tears. The visual style will reflect this emotional duality: sun-drenched, kinetic road trip sequences contrasted with intimate, quiet moments where reality sinks in.

Clara and Sydney’s journey isn’t just about a road trip to reclaim a pet lizard; it’s about clinging to the moments that matter, even when time is slipping away. Clara’s decision to keep her diagnosis a secret isn’t just about shielding Sydney from pain… It's about preserving a version of their friendship.
This film is small but mighty - and portrays an emotional depth & genuine friendship we know this young generation is aching for on screen. We want audiences to walk away from this film feeling like they’ve been on the road with Clara and Sydney- celebrating their bond, dreading their separation, and realizing that true friendship doesn’t end, even when the road does. Saving Buddy Charles is a love letter to those friendships that shape us, break us, and ultimately make us who we are.
We wrapped principal photography on April 18th, 2025 after 15 wonderful days of shooting. Our goal is to get into post production as fast as we can to get our movie out into the world. And that's where YOU come in. We would love your support wether that entails a donation, or even a social media follow. We also have some pretty cool incentives like invites to our premiere, personalized graphics, video calls with us! Check out our page and welcome to the SBC family!
