This heartbreak comedy explores Black romance while cherishing the lineage of women. Though we make romantic love out to be the most important, we should remember to be intentional about generational and platonic love. That fulfills us, too.

Mission Statement

I met, and very much loved, the late Ayesha K. Faines as staple co-panelists on The Grapevine TV. She educated and empowered Black women in love, and this piece uplifts her legacy. We're also empowered as lovers of film following Hollywood's shutdown; we continue to champion and create our stories.

The Story

SHE LOVES ME NOT is a dramatic romcom that follows our lovely leading lady, Xosha, as she uses the philosophies of historic Black women to guide her misshapen, non-monogamous love life for her weekly podcast. However, she’s to discover her progressive dating ideologies are a cover to avoid the heartbreak that stems from the strained relationship between she and her mother.

With a lineage of broken love, how do modern women end the generational curse

of broken hearts? What’s the new way to love?

THE LADIES

XOSHA is a self-described “difficult woman”. To her, monogamy feels outdated. She reviews her three suitors, appropriately referencing them by body parts: The Mind, The Heart, and The… ahem… Ego. Can Xosha leave her love-cynicism behind, woman up, and just have a good time

MILAN is a boisterous, sexy, loud and proud Sports Publicist who loves dating and is never single! In fact, she’s trying to date someone new right now - her client! What? Who says you can’t date your network? Only everyone? Whatever!

THE SUITORS

THE MIND | Intellect and activist. He and Xosha go on "non-dates", emotionally bond over intimate vulnerability, share likewise entrepreneurial hustle. They admire each other. Got a vibe… but they’re friends. Both choose ambition over love, or abide by fear...

THE HEART | Lil’ youngin. Health nut. Plant based. A jack-of-all-trades artist, as one must be. He finds Xosha to be educational, admirable, and invigorating. Optimistic in a dark world. Such chemistry. A good-guy-monogamist-poster-child... which is why he's taken, with a newborn daughter.

THE BIG... EGO* | Abs. Tatts. And... a purely carceral man-child for a night's splendor. Nothing more. Nothing less. Well - as far as Xosha's made privy to beneath his covert, manipulative handling.

"This is a love story."

What if bell hooks wrote Insecure? What if Nikki Giovanni directed an episode of Girlfriends? What if Maya Angelou's poetics overlayed Sex and the City?

Fleabag’s daughter. A dash of Spike's Nola Darling.

The dating chronicles of today's woman who won't settle for less.

WHY ME?

With over ten years of creative storytelling under my belt with comedic entertainment platforms such as Dope Files and We Shall Overchug, two seasons of my awarded comedy web series Sit Black & Relax, and my latest sketch comedy series JustLatasha's Inner Actions (out now!) I have developed an exceptional skill to write and produce my own stories which thematically revolve around self discovery and emotional complexity. I have always held a passion for our communal wellness and intra-communal relationships with a poignant point of view to match.

WHY NOW?

With unlicensed "Dating Coaches" and mind-numbing gender wars, we've strayed far from the brilliant Black minds who reminded us to be intentional with love - and each other. Black TV shows have been mass-canceled following the Hollywood strikes, and original movie ideas are becoming increasingly scarce. The power lies in our hands to create what we want to see without permission. This campaign aims to leverage the power in our collective communities so that we don't have to rely solely on decision-makers that don't look like us in Hollywood.

We must remember to continue to tell our stories, and most of all remember -

that love is not a war.

STRETCH GOALS

$20,000 is the foundational amount needed to get this short made at a quality production value for your viewing pleasure, and for the extremely talented cast and crew who are proud to work hard on this!

  • If we raise $25,000, we'll be able to upgrade our desired camera equipment package. Let our DP show off!
  • If we raise $30,000, we'll be able to shell out funds for a noteworthy cast and an Art Department: set design, hair, makeup, more props, etc.
  • If we raise $40,000, we'll be able to pay our crew closer to their day rates (who are currently working purely out of passion for the project and its message). We'll also be able to offer payment to the core production team, as we are all working for far below average because of our pure drive, grit, passion and talent!

Thank you for being part of this campaign and joining us in the making of this film!
