SHREWS follows two Shakespeare nerds in their twenties as they navigate dating, friendship, and occasional humiliation in this comedic and heartfelt buddy comedy. This web series re-examines the classic trope of living in New York as a young person from a distinctly Gen Z perspective.

Mission Statement

This web series will explore and satirize the complexities of dating in the online age from queer and straight perspectives, celebrate the importance of friendship, and tackle (maybe not tackle, we’re not very athletic) the challenges that face young people in the chaotic era of post-grad life.

The Story

The series follows Fleurette and Sophia, two washed-up theater kids navigating life in the hustle and bustle of New York City. Equal parts smart and clueless, the pair encounters sticky situations lurking behind every bodega. Think Broad City meets Booksmart, with a touch of Please Don’t Destroy.

Episodes

 - “Fleurette and Sophia Get Bushwicked” In Episode 1, Sophia warns Fleurette of the dangers of going on a date in the “Red Zone” of Bushwick, a one-mile radius in Brooklyn that only leads to heartbreak and ghosting.

 - “Fleurette and Sophia Start a Business” In Episode 2, the Shrews have two hours to plan a party with thirty people and zero dollars. How will they come up with the money in time? They do what they do best… improv.

 - “Fleurette and Sophia Do Laundry” In Episode 3, the Shrews embark on a harrowing journey to obtain the city's most coveted luxury: in-unit laundry.

Development & Timeline

Development

May: The idea for Shrews is born.

June-August: Sophia Harber and Fleurette Modica outline and write all three episodes.

Pre-Production

July: Caitlin Mayernik joins as Director/Producer and Lydia Sims joins as Producer.

August: Fay-Emmolo Johnson joins as DP. The team begins assembling the rest of the crew.

Production

September-November: Shoot! We have planned a 12-day shoot spaced out over a few weeks to accommodate our team’s schedules. Each episode will require 3-4 days of shooting and we will be filming the episodes sequentially.

Post-Production

December: Editing

Marketing & Distribution

Our goal is to post the series publicly to reach as wide an audience as possible. We plan on marketing the series on social media and spacing out the release of episodes. In addition, we will be submitting to web series festivals that do not require a premiere.

Inspiration

Drawing from the creative team's moodboard, we put together some visual inspiration that will influence the cinematography. With quick cuts and snappy dialogue, we will create an aesthetic that lies somewhere between a sitcom and sketch comedy.

Budget

We're gearing up to start shooting this month! This is the stage at which your support becomes crucial. Your donation of any amount will help us cover the cost of supplies, meals for our cast & crew, location, and transportation. We know there are many projects you could choose to invest in so we really appreciate any level of contribution you can commit to! We're committed to using your donation wisely and making every dollar count.

Our $8500 budget breakdown is as follows:

Stretch goals:

He has worked on a a variety of TV shows and films, most notably as the Focus Puller on the cult hit Terrifier 2 & the B Operator on the much-anticipated Terrifier 3. His favorite thing about cinematography is the collaborative effort it takes to make a film. Fay finds that a story through images and emotion, rather than dialogue, is the mark of good cinematography. Yes, people talking is important, but it’s what they don’t say, or how they look when they say it that he is more interested in. His goal is to put queer stories out in the world, with queer people running the show behind the scenes.
