The Story
Upon entering a party they may or may not have been invited to, Eliza and Theo are confronted with a strange game—pulling a quest from a bowl of missions. While other partygoers pull “flirt with the girl in red” or “do a handstand,” Eliza and Theo are met with a much more perplexing fate. Their slip reads: “find liz, and.”
What follows is their greatest attempt to find Liz, wherever—and whomever —she may be.
Inspired by the brain of Miranda July, a stunning lesbian friend group, and By Hook or By Crook, SIDEQUEST is a mismatched modern take on the odyssey, made by and for Brooklyn butches.
Told over the course of one scintillating night, Sidequest is a gleaming tale of lesbian lineage, friendship, citrus, healing a broken heart, and the treasures and trail markers we find along the way.
Sidequest sets out to let butches see themselves and to remind them that we are not the first, nor are we alone. A butch film, made for butches by butches, in a language that butches will understand. We want to represent the beautiful and delightfully singular underbelly of butch life, the magical bits that don’t make it in the history books (does any of it make it in the history books?).
With an irreverent, sometimes dry and sometimes wet sense of humor, Sidequest weaves together song and dance, beautiful dresses and handsome hats. Lollipop whimsy meets something genuinely chic. It’s spaghetti slapstick and a morning hot dog. It’s not that different from our lives...just in some ways.
This campaign will get the ideas off the page. As of now, our vision is far more expensive than we can afford. That doesn’t make it unreasonable, we are just broke. You’ll see in our Wishlist, we want to feed and compensate our crew, we want to rent good equipment, we want to cover transportation and location costs. In short, we want to make this film as beautiful and joyous as it can possibly be, and as any artist knows, that starts in the production process. We are also planning on submitting to festivals— another pricey endeavor.
Welcome to a butch’s shimmering inner world: beautiful women, sparkling lesbian parties, a hundred hats and toothpicks, and an unshakeable belief that we are connected to something worth living and loving for. We’re delighted you’re here. Come join us on our side quest: follow us on instagram @sidequestmovie and share this page with your friends and family (specifically your gay aunts, they are our target fundraising audience)

About This Team
Theo and Eliza have been collaborating for as long as they can remember (five years) — first as members of a sketch comedy team at Vassar College and now as roommates in Brooklyn, NY. They make a very good team when it comes to important things like making meatballs: Eliza does the seasoning, and Theo the mushing of the meat and egg. They are very pleased to be moving through the world together right now, thanking their lucky stars for love in their hearts and hats in the closet.

Theo is a director, archivist, and artist concerned with mapping dyke histories and taking the sheet off of the proverbial ghost. He is a founding member of trans-led movement company Gesture Theater, and a lover in all respects.

Eliza is a Brooklyn-based comedian, writer, and director with a host of skills that may seem surprising, to some. She is currently a producer at Wicked Delicate Films and is licensed to cut down small trees, if need be.
Maya is a Brooklyn-based nonbinary lesbian with passions for drag, improv, and telling unseen stories. Consistently called both "bossy" and "friendly" as a child, they are so excited to use those traits as a producer on this majestic story.
Erika is a femme-dyke clown, creator, and theater artist based in Brooklyn. She is a founding member of trans-led movement company Gesture Theater, and inspires a twinkle in the eye of most people she encounters.
