The Story
“I cast a spell on you… and you will forget me.”
"Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me..." are the lyrics from Fleetwood Mac's iconic "Silver Springs," penned by Stevie Nicks about Lindsey Buckingham -- one of modern culture's most infamous push-and-pull romances. Stevie and Lindsey met in high school and starting making music together before joining Fleetwood Mac, the band that would catapult them into super-stardom.
Tortured romance, disappointment, and passion became the story behind the songs of Fleetwood Maac, with band mates Christine and John McVie adding to the mythology. But Nicks and Buckingham held the brightest torch. Their tumultuous love story (or lack of love with Nicks writing about him, "I know I could have loved you, but you would not let me") carries on to this day with "Silver Springs" hitting number 2 on Billboard's Rock chart in late 2025.
Stevie's song is a spell -- one we'd never wish away from the world -- but what the film "Silver Springs Stranger" sets out to explore is how things could be different for an intrepid, young singer-songwriter today. What happens when a woman hits her breaking point, and says "enough is enough"? What if the star of our daydream decides she doesn't want tortured love to be her legacy?

Writer, director, and actor Kelly Tatham found just as much inspiration from her own love life as she did from Stevie and Lindsay's story. Following the thread she started Multiverse Dating for Beginners (DUST, 2019), her last calling card short about the challenges of modern dating and finding "true" love, the new short film Silver Springs Stranger carries the torch of questioning choice, intention, actions, and outcome.
What spells do we cast -- intentionally or unintentionally -- with our words, actions, beliefs, and behaviors?
Made on an ultra low budget with some of the best up and coming talent in Vancouver, Canada, Silver Springs Stranger hopes to inspire audiences to cast their own spells -- for love, art, and freedom. It's easy to get bogged down by the world today, but we all have the power to create something new for ourselves and the people around us. The existence of this short film proves that!

We all have the power to tell new stories -- stories different from the ones handed down to us as scripts -- and with your support, the story of Silver Springs Stranger can go far and wide.

Your crowdfunding donations will cover the cost of production, post-production, festival submissions, and give us a little extra support to get us to our first festival. (You can read the exact breakdown of costs in the "Wishlist" section.) If we exceed our goal, all extra funds will go towards festival costs -- ensuring the film gets in front of as many people as possible -- as well as to the cast and crew as honorariums for their time, craft, and passion.
As independent filmmakers, we are used to working for free or on a dime -- borrowing whatever we can -- while making the film look like a million bucks. Your donations bring us closer to a reality where we can pay our team properly. We can't state this emphatically enough: your patronage of the arts is a spell in and of itself, and we're thrilled to offer some pretty fun and witch-y incentives in exchange for your generosity.

We are all the authors of our own stories. A story can be rewritten at anytime. While our story focuses on the pain of unrequited love, it speaks to broader themes of dignity, respect, legacy, and community. It's important to remember, as the noise around us creates a cacophony of disillusionment and fear, that we always have choice, agency, and free will.
The future is unwritten (to quote another iconic singer-songwriter) and we all have the capacity to create the beautiful world our hearts know is possible -- and that starts by acknowledging our personal wounds and moving past them.
Thank you so much for supporting Silver Springs Stranger. Please share our project with anyone you think would get a kick out of it (Fleetwood Mac and witch-y romance fans to the front)!
You can watch the rest of writer-director Kelly Tatham's films here, follow her on IG and Facebook, and you can follow the rest of our cast and crew by finding their links on our Team page. We can't wait to share the film and its upcoming success with you!
The time has come to set ourselves free. So may it be.

About This Team

Filmmaking is the best kind of team sport and Silver Springs Stranger only exists because of a dedicated team of incredible independent filmmakers.
Led by Kelly Tatham (Mommy Issues, Multiverse Dating for Beginners), the cast and crew for Silver Springs Stranger came together on Coast Salish territory at two locations -- one in North Vancouver and one in East Vancouver -- to build the set and shoot the film. Kelly is a multi-disciplinary performance artist whose work spans genres and modalities. She is currently living on the road and documenting her travels as she brings this project to the big screen.
This project owes a huge debt of gratitude to Jan and Emma Toren for hosting us in their North Van home music studio and to Sparky's Gearhouse for providing gear and letting us build the dressing room and backstage sets in their East Van studio space at such a great rate.
Director of Photography Indiana Wilson (Tides of Desire, Second Chance at Love) led the camera team and worked with Kelly to shape the vision of the film. From developing the visual language of the story to lens tests, shot lists, and bringing the talented and joyful camera team on board, Indy brought immense talent, kindness, and care to the project that continues to resonate through post-production and beyond.
Production Designer Kat Sawatzky is a filmmaking whiz. She is not only brilliant at building and decking sets, she is also in UBC's Creative Writing program developing her own films. Kat created the dressing room and backstage areas from scratch, on a dime, in Sparky's Gearhouse studio and brought the music studio to life with her signature style.
Randi-Lee Leonard co-stars in the film as Kayleigh, Billie's harried bestie and band mate. Supportive 'til the end, but even more frustrated with Parker than Billie herself, Randi-Lee delivered the energy of her character through the entire process of making the film, creating a container of encouragement and won't-back-down-ness than is the only reason you're seeing this crowdfunding campaign today <3
From Sam Perrin & Aurélien Rosset's badass camera skills and grilled cheese lovin' vibes to Sarah Maguire's ebullient assistance to Catherine Tatham holding down the stress so Kelly didn't have to, our entire team was brilliant and we had the most fun making this film for you. Lincoln Tisdale is a performer to watch and we were so lucky to have the likes of Mel Yerna as our Gaffer and Tristan C. Piña editing the project. Victoria Logan did beautiful 70s inspired makeup and hair, Lindsay Clark designed the insanely cool magazine spread, while Michaela Mackenzie rocked BTS photography and her own Penny Lane moment with Sarah. Vera Arthur rocked it as our key grip. Kayla Renfro jumped in as a trainee swing, impressing everyone with her skills, and was guided expertly by Bailey Vose, as our charming art team of Willow Tiessen and Elsa Smolynec, with direction by Eunsong Huh, filled out a sparkling set for the team to light up. Gordon McNaughton brought all the vibes as a PA extraordinaire, crafty master, and one of the featured backgrounds as Melissa Taylor, Carlo Yu, and Sean Foster made the rest of the background pop with their auric presences. We can't wait to how Phoebe Titus makes the colour of film sing and hear Grace Chiang's soon-to-be epic score and sound design, all made possible, of course, by Edward Hsieh's excellent on set sound recording skills. Everyone on this project is a total rock star, and we are so excited to see what comes next for them.
