The Story

In a spirited celebration of Black girlhood, "Sing a Black Girl Song" follows three young friends as they navigate the challenges of adolescence, embracing their unique voices and the power of their sisterhood. In the vibrant world of an all-night sleepover, 11-year-old Symone and her best friends, Kayla and Grace, navigate the challenges of growing up as young Black girls. When Symone experiences her first period, she is propelled into a whirlwind of confusion and embarrassment. With the unwavering support of her friends, Symone embarks on a journey of self-discovery, embracing womanhood, and the unbreakable bond of sisterhood. Set against the backdrop of laughter, tears, and the empowering melody of a "Jig A-Low" song, the film celebrates the unfiltered joy and resilience of Black girlhood, reminding us all of the beauty in embracing one's true self, unapologetically.
THEMES

SETTING
For many pre-teen girls, sleepovers represent a significant aspect of growing up. They provide a safe haven where they can express their authentic selves fully. It is a space where they can laugh, cry, sing, dance, and express their feelings about themselves and the world that they exist in.

This is a film told by adults who felt what it meant to be a Black girl in a world that still doesn’t know what to do with this genre. Sing A Black Girl Song creates a third space for black girlhood—this film isn’t just one thing. It is both a film and a music video. It is both from the eyes of an adult and the eyes of a child. It is both documentary and narrative. In this regard, Sing A Black Girl Song has the frankness of Just Another Girl on the IRT and the unfettered girliness of something like "The Cheetah Girls". It should feel like every image was curated by these girls and when we’re not with them, it should feel like every image talks back to them with the realness and care they deserve. This is a movie about black girls existing within themselves without shame.
