Mission Statement
The Story
The story begins with Becky, a recovered addict, reaching out to her son, Nick, with the hope of mending their broken relationship. Although Becky’s life is now filled with wonderful people who care about her, this was not always the case. Before she was able to turn her life around, Becky not only struggled to recover from addiction, but also to raise Nick. Her outbursts and short temper often led to fights that left Nick traumatized. Nick’s dysfunctional upbringing played a large part in his choice to become a therapist. He strives to help people heal from their past and provide them the skills to combat their internal battles, yet seems to be unable to do so himself. As the story progresses, the audience will see how their character growth gives them a chance for redemption not only with themselves, but with each other.

The culmination of our experiences molds us into who we are. That being said, there are specific moments in both Becky and Nick’s lives that act as defining moments for them and their relationship with each other. Through the use of flashbacks, this film will highlight those moments and showcase how these characters’ pasts forced them into the lives they now live.

This story is based on personal experiences I faced growing up. Much like Nick, I felt betrayed when things were stolen from me, when my worth as a human was brought to question. However, I’ve begun to learn that things do get better. I’ve found that just as I’m learning and growing, my parents and relatives are too. They still have their own battles and their own pain that they must overcome. Real people like Becky, who came to America as an Asian immigrant of war, only knew how to survive. Having to overcome language barriers, poverty, and their own trauma, most of them continued to struggle to provide more than the bare necessities once becoming parents. The goal of this film is to allow us to look back and find the good in our families, and learn from our mistakes.

Kang has been acting professionally for about 3 years now. What started as a hobby that stemmed from his childhood dream, became his reality when a certain global incident (cough cough) landed him on the chopping block at his desk job of almost 10 years. Since then, he's been navigating an industry that he only dreamt about being a part of. His love for story, and perspective on life has helped him through all the rejections and uncertainties that come with one of the most competitive fields in the world. Kang hopes to add that same love and perspective with his role as Pastor Rey in "Sins Of My Youth".
Kang has also appeared in shows like Netflix Beef and For All Man Kind (Apple TV+) .

Michelle Hayoung Park is a Korean-American actress and digital creator based in Los Angeles, CA. From a personal standpoint, I'm creating this film for myself and for people who might have been through the same type of struggle that I went through. I was inspired to make this film when I was in therapy. In the process of healing some of the verbal abuse I went through, I began to see how my parents were people growing too and how their brokenness might have plagued them from being the best version of themselves. This film is like a love letter to those closest to me saying that I understand how some of them became who they became. I can empathize for their pain and trauma and that was the inspiration behind the project.
With our current culture and emphasis on Asian American stories and mental health, I felt like a film like this is more relevant than ever. An example I’ll be referencing is Everything Everywhere All at Once. My friends and I resonated with its strong themes about dysfunctionally families and familial drama. Our favorite part of Everything Everywhere at Once was when Joy and Evelyn mended their relationship (we were all ugly crying by this part of the film). I’m a sucker for cathartic films and I want audiences of mine to feel the same way. I bring this up to bring confidence into this story. To show that this water has been treaded before and with the success of these Asian American stories, I want to ride this wave and create this film.

Patrick is a director from Orange County, California. Patrick comes from a family of immigrants and spent a lot of time with his grandmother due to his absent parents. Growing poor and with a father who was in and out of prison, there were a lot of anxieties on what kind of man he will turn out to be. So when he discovered film, it became the thing that saved his life in more ways than one. It started out as a hobby that gave him direction, which later turned into a livelihood. Patrick has been hard at work developing his voice and talent. He hopes that his projects can be a testament to people who come from an environment similar to his. He believes that by sharing our struggles we feel less alone and it helps loosens the grip our trauma has on us. Patrick has applied this philosophy to his filmmaking and in doing so has gone on to be selected by Oscar and BAFTA qualifying competitions such as LA Shorts International Film Festival and been featured on Cineasian (a curation site promoting Asian filmmakers).
