The Story
Sip is a story about June: a young woman who is exhausted and completely drained from trying to keep it all together. She is the picture of postpartum depression and anxiety. As she goes about her normal hypervigilant night routine - checking locks and burners - her husband asks a question that stops her in her tracks: ‘Do you want a glass of wine?’
June proceeds to reminisce about her pregnancy while she contemplates the question. She remembers how she tried to do everything ‘right’ and all the pressure she put on herself to be perfect. She grieves all that she lost along the way and relives the anxiety she felt building inside of her.
As she remembers these moments, she finally decides to let go and have a drink. It’s only then revealed that things might not be as they appeared. She must come to terms with reality and grieve the perfect life she once imagined in order to give herself grace.
This film tackles themes of loss and heartbreak where joy once was. It explores grief in a way that may catch the audience off guard, because trauma never comes with a warning. The story is meant to be real and raw and hopefully shed light on something that happens all too often, but is rarely discussed.
Now more than ever, the challenges of parenthood need to be discussed. We live in a rapidly changing world, but pain and tragedy are still a constant in the human experience. So many parents wanting to start a family experience extreme difficulties along the way, such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, infant loss or numerous other hardships. Women’s health especially still has strides to make in the medical industry as well as in the public perception. Too many women are facing life threatening circumstances during their pregnancies and deliveries and too many aspects of their medical care are being politicized, making it even harder for women to get the care they need when they need it most. I almost didn't make it through both my miscarriage and my first live birth. Those traumas don't just go away overnight and they are far too common for women today. My faith and family helped get me through my experiences, but I still felt very alone during that time.
It is so important to give yourself grace when going through any kind of difficulty. I want to remind viewers that if they are struggling it’s not because they did anything wrong and it’s not God punishing them. No one is perfect and striving for perfection will only steal your joy. You are not your circumstances and your ‘failings’ don’t define you. Things might be hard for a long time, but life is still worth living and you are worth so much more than you might feel like right now.
I have been working in film for a decade now and am self-taught for the most part. When I shared this script with my DP - Connor Drake - he helped combine my ideas with his technical expertise. He's been able to take my vision and turn it into something truly remarkable. As a team, I think we can really make something special. Here is a sneak peak at some of his look book images:
By reaching our funding goal, we will be able to meet the minimum amount needed to make this film. All these funds will go to the production of the film. Any additional funds raised will go towards postproduction.
Production will take place in May around Baltimore. My goal is to have the film submitted to festivals in the Fall with a general public premiere the following Spring.
I'm hoping that this film is the first of many in my directing career. Movies have always helped me to process my emotions and work through various difficulties. I'd like this film to be that outlet for many who have gone through similar storms or are in the midst of a storm right now.
For some reason, the topics of miscarriage, delivery, and postpartum struggles are difficult to discuss openly in our culture. My hope is that this film will help create a safe space for more people to share their stories and hopefully shed some light on a pain that's too often left to be dealt with in the dark.
I thank God that I am here today and I pray that He is holding my first baby tightly in His arms right now. I rest in the hope that one day I will meet my sweet baby June.
