The Story
Slay is a dark slasher comedy that mixes the self-referential, cheeky horror of Scream with the absurdity and modernity of Bottoms. Slay follows Agnes, a sensitive and romantic bisexual teenager who falls fast and hard and cares A LOT about what people think of her. Despite a recent killing and a city-wide curfew, quarterback Ryan Carter throws a birthday bash for himself at a desolate lakeside cabin. Agnes goes to Ryan’s party because her survivalist best friend Taylor needs a wingwoman, and Agnes needs to save face and look strong so people stop thinking of her as Ryan’s hysterical, crazy ex. Once she gets to the party, her priorities rearrange. Agnes falls in love at first sight with the SAME GIRL her ex-boyfriend is trying to hook up with! But this girl is not into touchy-feely relationships, so Agnes has to learn to be unattached and casual, fast. Just as Agnes starts to convince everyone she’s over Ryan, Taylor reveals a revenge plot meant to avenge Agnes’ broken heart. Jocks start to disappear from the party… at the hands of a masked killer. As more people die, Agnes must ONE. Control her emotions which are not good in a crisis, TWO. Face Ryan, her public perception, and claims that she’s the jilted killer, and most importantly THREE. Decide what’s more important, her survival…. Or her chance to rebrand as a chill girl.
AGNES (she/her) just wants to be liked. A sensitive and creative teenager, an internet stalker, a hopeless romantic. Her loved ones mean the world to her. She's the kind of girl who, despite her best efforts, asks her close friends "do you hate me?" at least once a day. Agnes has had a lot of therapy and just wants to survive the night without being activated into a panic attack.
TAYLOR (any pronouns) is an awkward butch sweetheart. Agnes' fiercely loyal and horny best friend. Obsessed with survivalism and tragedies, currently digging Flight 571. Taylor's planned an elaborate FAKE MURDER to scare everyone into ditching the party, including her one true love LUISA. It helps that ruining Ryan's party will make Agnes feel better.
I created Slay because I was OVER IT. Over sanitized queer and female representation in media. Over people I’m better than breaking up with me. Over the lack of control I have in my reputation or who likes me. Over feeling pressure to write something smart and complex, when the emotions I feel are HUGE and unsubtle. It’s not my duty to prove to you that I’m smart, or kind, or that I’m not a homicidal maniac with a revenge fetish. Slay is a love letter to mess, to drama, to Camp, to myself and to every queer teenager out there who feels like a terrible person. You’re allowed to be gay AND shitty. Perfect is boring.

About This Team
Anna Kotecki is a queer writer/filmmaker, a really good kisser, and a graduate student in the MFA Screenwriting-Comedy program at DePaul University. They previously attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they earned a BA in Film and English and were Editor-in-Chief of the satirical Madison Misnomer. Anna completed production on their first feature Last Days in 2022 and most recently, their script Nessie Goes to Prom was produced by the Atlanta-based Couchtown Media. Anna writes dark absurdist comedy, romance, and coming-of-age features. They center characters who, much like themself, dive off the deep end into obsession and female rage.
Summer Lee Cortes (she/her), is a Latinx writer, director, and producer, based out of Chicago. Her films disregard black-and-white thinking and instead communicate the vulnerable side of the human experience, which includes living in the discomfort of the "gray" area. She is in her final year of graduate school; pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television Directing from DePaul University, intending to work collaboratively and grow as a creator. Summer believes Roger Ebert said it best, “The movies are like a machine that generates empathy."
Manda Mutai is a writer/director based in Chicago. She currently attends DePaul University to pursue an MFA in Directing. Her work pushes the boundaries of the coming-of-age genre and features radial and expensive stories from a Kenyan-American perspective. Her art reimagines the continent and those of the diaspora and rejects what Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie calls, "the single story." IG: @mandazifilms
Rob Luedtke is entirely grateful for the opportunity to work with this #DreamTeam and to bring this magnificent story to life. Now, halfway through obtaining his BFA in film directing at DePaul, Rob is gearing up for new challenges & learning opportunities as he enters his twenties! Outside of producing, you can find him playing Tetris and exploring new parts of Chicago with his wonderful life partner Avery.
