The Story
Sleeping With Earrings On is about love prevailing over fear, uncertainty and hate. It was originally written and presented as a one act play which was part of the New York New Works Theatre Festival (2014). We were surprised and delighted when the panel of Broadway producers and Emmy winning writers chose our production as the winner of the festival. We are inspired to bring this story of unconditional love and acceptance to a greater audience.
From the very first rehearsal it was our goal to keep the love going amongst us, as friends and collaborators, so that we could truly infuse it into the story. Quickly, Wednesdays (aka rehearsal day) became something all of us looked forward to. The amount of passion that the cast had for this story combined with the chemistry between us molded us into a family. The message of unconditional love saturated each of our lives until we couldn’t help but give in. When we were finally able to perform in front of a live audience, the emotional tension was palpable. We were later told that even grown men became misty in their seats despite our female centric story. Somehow the we were able to reach beyond the stereotypical gender constrains and touch those we weren’t sure would be able to relate.
We want to bring a different perspective to this love story by telling it from the points of view of the couple’s family. The fact that we don’t reveal that it is a same sex couple until later in the film doesn’t really matter, the surprise (or not) isn’t the point. All love can be complicated and can challenge the emotions of the people closest to you. We want our audience to root for this love story so that by the time our 2nd bride is revealed they either can’t help but love her too or at least feel conflicted. To challenge people’s comfort zones in order to elicit emotion (and/or change) is part of the storytelling.
