Based on real events, "So, You're Dying" is a dark dramedy about the impact of finding out you have a "significantly reduced life expectancy". Part instructional video - Part memoir, we follow Kyle as he returns to his shitty job, inform his friends, and break the news to his partner. It's awkward.

Mission Statement

This film is based on real events lived by the Director (Thankfully he has since received a better prognosis). Taking a traumatic experience and transforming it into art is more than just therapeutic for the director... He hopes it will be a comfort to others in a similar situation.

The Story

"So, You're Dying" is dark dramedy short film that is based on real events.

In August 2024, after years of baffling medical incidents, I went to a routine doctor's appointment to receive what had become the same old news: The lining of my arteries are spontaneously tearing, no one knows why, but with proper medication and care, I should be able to live a long, mostly normal, life.

Instead, my doctor informed me that, based on my latest scans, I now had a "significantly reduced life expectancy".

Needless to say, it ruined my day.

Two weeks later, I received a better prognosis (Thank god). However, in that two week period, this script was written... As a way for me to process what I was going through... As a last attempt at making something beautiful... As a distraction from the terrifying reality I was living in...

And now we are making it a reality!

-----------------------------------------------------------

So, You're Dying is a memory and reflection driven piece, that, while grounded in realism, jumps through time and topic at the speed of thought. The pure events of the day are few, but the greater journey is found in his unpacking of his journey of the last 12 years.

Kyle, our protagonist, is a normal guy living in New York City, he works multiple jobs, he is chasing his dreams, he's broke. In one way, however, he is very unusual... his arteries keep tearing from the inside, and no one knows why...

But he thinks, at least, that he has it under control with medication, diet, and lifestyle changes.

We find him at yet another doctor's appointment, waiting in a quiet room for the usual routine of poking, prodding, and head scratching, but when the doctor arrives, it is anything but routine.

The doctor has found something in the most recent tests, and the prognosis is bad.

Death bad.

That is pretty bad.

But Kyle isn't dying today, or tomorrow... Just sooner than he would have expected and withing the next few years.

Kyle emerges from the appointment, stunned, confused, and aimless.

He also has to go to work.

Maybe he shouldn't have scheduled his catering shift for right after this doctor's appointment.

As he travels to work he passes the rest of the city of New York living their lives.

They have no idea the tragedy he is going through. It's just a Tuesday like any other.

While he walks, we see glimpses of his past medical journey. The path that led him here. The medical episodes. The testing. The anxiety.

We also see him unable to respond honestly via text to his partner. Does he want to spare her the pain of processing this trauma alone? Can he just not fathom what just happened?

Ah work... the great distractor from all life's tragedies...

If he was dying tomorrow he could just quit, but he isn't. He is just dying "soon." And the rent must be paid. So off to work he goes!

Unfortunately the event he is catering, is an event for Micro Influencers.

And they are the worst.

This would be enough to make any sane person question the point of living, let alone one with a newly found impending mortality.

While he struggles through a shift from hell, we return to reflections of his journey to this point.

Throughout his journey one face keeps returning... That of his partner, Jenna.

His rock. His love. The one person who has been there for him.

How can he tell her. Seeing it hurt her would be worse than the news itself.

At this point we leave the past and jump to the future.

Kyle will get better at informing people. Through trial and error. Telling his friends and acquaintances get easier. We watch him learn how to share his terrible news.

But that is in the future. And we live (sadly, sometimes) in the present.

After his shift is done, he has to go home.

When he arrives home, he takes his usual place on the couch next to Jenna. And just as he is about to tell her the terrible news...

We cut to black.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

We aim to shoot the film this summer or fall (depending on scheduling) in New York City, with a hope to be on the festival circuit in 2026!

This film has a killer team coming together (check out our team page!), and is going to be a work of art that all will be proud of being a part of!

If we reach our fundraising goal, we will be able to fully fund our short and see it through production!

Should we raise more than our goal, we will be able to see our film through post-production and the festival circuit!

We hope you will join our team.
