Mission Statement

We want you to grieve unapologetically in your own way. The funeral industry tells you the ‘correct’ way to honour a loved one, and how much it should cost. We’re here to help you find your version. Sorry For Your Cost is a proof of concept for a feature film.

The Story

Teenage Ren is a scrappy and determined theatre nerd with her whole life ahead of her. Her working class parents Anna and Randall have been saving for a decade for her to attend theatre school, and thanks to a brilliant rendition of Hamlet’s ‘to be or not to be’ monologue at her audition SHE GOT IN.

The day her acceptance letter arrives, Anna dies in a car accident. Ren is riddled with guilt, convinced that her fight with her Mom right beforehand is the reason she died. The family seeks out funeral services at Dying+, an eerie cross between a bougie zen spa and IKEA (think if Gwyneth Paltrow ran a funeral home, but Jeff Bezos scaled it up).

The family can’t afford the $15K it costs to host a ‘proper’ funeral, but Tatiana (the too-eager saleswoman with maternal instincts and no boundaries) shamelessly upsells the family before offering them a last resort: they can abandon Mom’s body at Dying+ to be cremated and placed in a mass grave.

Ren is faced with an impossible choice: drop out of theatre school and use her hard-earned tuition money to pay for the funeral, or pursue her dreams and leave Mom behind. Sorry For Your Cost is the story of a family coming to terms with the predatory nature of the funeral industry, and ultimately finding solace in their own rituals.

This film is inspired by my own experiences planning my Mom’s funeral and the follow-up research I did on the funeral industry. I became fascinated by how funeral homes financially exploit the grief of people right after they’ve lost someone. I also reflected on the immense privilege required to even host a funeral which costs on average $10,000 CAD in Vancouver, Canada for an open casket viewing plus cremation and ceremony. This inspired me to write a story about a family fighting for dignity in the process of death, and ultimately finding it in themselves by doing the funeral their own way.

Our film is a chaotic and joyful ode to the ridiculous fear we have around death and funerals, and how creating our own rituals can be a more powerful way to grieve.

My version of this is making my Mom's favourite salad on the anniversary of her death and bringing it down to the river where she liked to walk. I also love to keep her close by wearing her clothes - including this leather jacket from the early 2000s that I have on in the pitch video :)

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

We initially planned for a three-day shoot, however during the casting process we met the wonderful Adeline Lo who is currently a high school student at Hugh McRoberts Secondary School in Richmond, British Columbia. Despite starting her professional career less than a year earlier, we were captivated by Adeline's tenacity and commitment to bringing the role of Ren to life.

Due to union rules, performers of a certain age have limited shooting hours (as they should!) We wanted to support an emerging, local talent in her first leading role and still pay our production crew their agreed-upon rates. We decided to add an extra shooting day to give Adeline and our entire production the opportunity to fully realize the story, and learn as much as possible from the experience.

With the budget shift from post-production into production, we are now needing some extra support to get over the finish line with editing, colour grading, sound design, score, ADR and festival submissions!

HITTING OUR GOAL OF 14.5K WILL ALLOW US TO:

  • PAY OUR POST-PRODUCTION TEAM during a truly challenging time for our industry. With multiple labour strikes ongoing in the US market, the film service industry in Vancouver has been hit hard. We are proud to be a low budget independent production still paying our crew a fair rate.

  • RECORD ADR OR "AUTOMATED DIALOGUE REPLACEMENT" - sometimes on a film set there are noises we can't control :) Recording clean dialogue from actors, or even additional dialogue to expand the creative aspects of sound design, is a very typical activity in post-production!

  • SUBMIT TO FILM FESTIVALS so our story can be seen and shared around the world.

We understand that in this economy not everyone has the financial resources to help out. If you cannot contribute financially, there is still one major way you can help! -- SHARE!
