Mission Statement

This project exists to document and share the origins, stewardship, and community of the Stagecoach 400—honoring the people who built the route, return to it, and continue to shape the culture of bikepacking through care, commitment, and shared experience.

The Story

Official Trailer: The Stagecoach 400 Limited Documentary Series

The Stagecoach 400 is more than a route or an event. It’s a community shaped by return, care, and commitment. Riders return year after year not to chase results, but to experience something that demands a lot and gives something meaningful in return.

This documentary series explores the Stagecoach 400 from the inside—through the people who created it, those who continue to steward it, and the community that has formed around it.

Logline:

A multi-part journey through grit, heat, and human endurance. Where the line between suffering and transformation disappears. Told through the people who return to and steward the Stagecoach 400.

Why me

I’m Gregg Dunham, a documentary filmmaker and longtime member of the ultra-distance cycling community. I’ve ridden the Stagecoach 400 six times. This story comes from lived experience—from returning to the route, being shaped by it, and wanting to document what makes it matter beyond the miles.

From the beginning, this series was developed in close collaboration with Brendan Collier, the route’s creator, and Meg Knobel, the current route organizer. Working alongside them helped ensure the story was told with care, accuracy, and respect for the values that have shaped Stagecoach from the start.

Why this story

Stagecoach isn’t about finish times or outcomes. It’s about stewardship, self-reliance, and a shared understanding of responsibility; to the route and to one another. These values helped shape the culture of bikepacking, long before the sport had mainstream popularity, and they continue to influence how people ride today.

Why now

The Stagecoach 400 continues to evolve, as does the community around it. This series captures a specific moment in that ongoing story—told by someone inside the experience, and shaped by the people who return to it year after year. If this story isn’t documented with care, that moment is lost.

Filming for the series is complete

The story was captured during the Grand Depart, focusing on the moments between effort and doubt—where care for the route, for one another, and for the experience itself becomes visible.

Rather than explaining rules or outcomes, the series is interested in why people return, how the route shapes them, and how a shared ethic has grown around this experience.

The Stagecoach 400 has played a significant role in shaping the culture of bikepacking.

Long before the sport had a cultural foothold, this route helped define a way of riding that values self-reliance, respect for place, and community stewardship.

This project documents the origins of the event and explores how it has influenced the sport as it exists today.

If we surpass our goal

Additional funds will allow us to deepen post-production, expand community screenings, and reinvest in the people who gave their time, skills, and care to help make this project possible. Ensuring the work is finished responsibly and shared well.

Why This Matters Now

The Stagecoach 400 continues to evolve, as does the community around it. This series captures a specific moment in that ongoing story—told from within, by someone who has lived it, and shaped by the people who continue to return to it.

Director’s Statement

The Stagecoach 400 has been part of my life for a long time. I’ve ridden it six times, and each return has shaped how I understand endurance, place, and community. Over the years, I realized that what makes Stagecoach special isn’t just the route itself, but the people who built it, care for it, and keep coming back. Not for recognition, but for the experience it offers.

This series comes from being inside that world. I wanted to document the origins of the route, the stewardship behind it, and the community that has formed around it, not to explain or mythologize it, but to pay attention to what actually happens out there. The moments between effort and doubt. The quiet decisions.

Stagecoach isn’t about finish times or outcomes. It’s about commitment, responsibility, and a shared understanding that some experiences matter precisely because they ask a lot. In telling this story, my goal was to honor that ethic and to create something that feels true to the people who live it.

This film is both a document and a thank-you to a community that shaped how I ride, how I tell stories, and how I see the value of showing up year after year.

About This Team

The Team

The team is small but mighty. I worked closely with Meg Knobel, the current route organizer, who helped facilitate and support the filming of the Grand Depart. The series was captured with the help of an incredible group of volunteer professional camera operators who documented the route from the inside. Post-production is led by a single editor who also serves as sound designer and is an award-winning documentary film editor, shaping the story through both picture and sound.

The series will also feature bespoke original music created by a professional composer team, working closely with the editor to ensure the score reflects the tone, restraint, and emotional rhythm of the Stagecoach 400.

Together, we are committed to crafting a final story that honors the community, the route, and the heart of the Stagecoach 400.
