The Story

Streetlights tells the story of Joel, a 10 year old boy who decides to run away from home after his mother’s death. In the streets, he meets Leona, a teenage street performer.  Joel's imagination flares, as he sees Leona as the real life incarnate of Aka, his favorite Manga hero. Life is not a comic book though, and Joel learns some hard truths about life and survival on the streets.

My mother passed a long time ago. Even though I was in my twenties, for a long time I felt like Joel: a kid wandering in the darkness, trying to find something that makes his pain go away.

I believe filmmaking, as an art, can give us the tools to transform negative experiences into meaningful and positive ones. This philosophy is what drives my stories, which derive from extreme emotional states of mind – like loss, grief, solitude –forcing the characters on a personal journey of growth. Human beings are not taught to deal with extreme emotional situations. How our souls learn to do that, and the powerful transformation and growth that comes with it, is something that amazes me. My intention is to create inspiring experiences for the audiences, and hopefully, leave a positive impact in their lives.

“Street Lights “ is a very sensitive project for me. Not only because I hope that it will be an important piece for my future that represents my voice as a filmmaker and helps me step up in my career, but also because it explores some of the most painful feelings that a human being can experience, from a personal point of view.

Loss and pain propel can propel us on dark journeys, where finding your own way to cope with pain is what is going to help you make it to the light. This is the theme of our film, where every character in the story is undergoing their own struggle to finally overcome the darkness or fail.
