Set in a small coastal Maine tourist town, Summer Interlude follows Levi, a recent high school graduate and aspiring filmmaker as he navigates the college transition, chasing his dreams, and outgrowing his parents' wishes, all in a few short days.

After receiving a rejection letter from film school, Levi spends the rest of the summer working at his parents' campground, dreading the fall. Without college as his chance to escape the small town, he has to enroll in the local community college, forcing two more years trapped in the same "run-down tourist trap" (his words) that he's been in his whole life.

But then, with a week left until classes start, he runs into Sarah, a classmate who's taking an alternative approach to college. As the two get to know each other, Levi faces a decision between chasing his dreams and obeying his parents' wishes, taking it to the final moments as the summer sun sets.

Levi Parker (18) Levi is an introspective aspiring filmmaker who feels trapped in his small coastal hometown. After getting rejected from his dream school, he feels lost about his future. Despite the disappointment, Levi is a talented filmmaker who is passionate about capturing the world around him on camera and sharing them on his YouTube channel. When he meets Sarah, he starts to come out of his rut and encounters a life-changing opportunity, and must convince himself and his parents of the right choice as the clock ticks down.

Sarah Mitchell (18) Sarah is a free-spirited and independent girl who recently moved to the coastal town. She works a summer job at the local arcade while waiting to leave to travel on her own in the fall. She’s friendly and likable, adding spontaneity and adventure to Levi's life, while providing guidance at the same time. Sarah takes life much less seriously than Levi, often playfully teasing him, while also show a genuine interest in him with a bit of her own mystery.

Andrew Parker (13) Andrew is Levi's younger brother. While he admires Levi and wants to spend time with him, he can also be mischievous and annoying in a little brother way, often poking fun at Levi's seriousness. Despite the occasional teasing, Andrew is fiercely loyal to Levi and wants to be included in his adventures. He's energetic and lighthearted, a stark contrast to Levi's brooding demeanor in the beginning of the film.

Levi's Dad (Mid 40s) Dad is supportive, hardworking, a little clueless. Dad loves his family and wants the best for his sons, but sometimes struggles to understand Levi's artistic aspirations. He's a practical man who has dedicated his life to providing for his family through their campground business. Dad has a warm and friendly demeanor who can also portray a hint of frustration and strictness, but comes around for Levi’s interests in the end.

Levi’s Mom (Mid 40s) Mom is caring but firm. She loves her sons and wants the best for them, but is frustrated by Levi's recent behavior. She's practical and takes charge, evident in her running the campground and quickly offering Sarah a job with them. She's also a bit controlling and can be quick to anger. However, there's a hint of her own past dreams hinted at with dusty audition tapes in the living room.

Summer Interlude is a coming-of-age film about young people, created by young people, for young people.

Spiraling from a college scriptwriting class, this feature was a vision that I knew I needed to bring to life from the first few pages that I wrote.

First, it's real. It's written from the experiences and emotions that my peers and I felt less than two years ago, with just enough time removed to process while still preserving the authenticity and rawness of the memories. They'll be recreated on the screen in a way that feels as chaotic, uncertain, and urgent as they do in real life. 

Second, it's a story that needs to be told. This film encapsulates universally-relatable feelings, while still accurately illustrating the Generation-Z experience in today's world. It's an opportunity to start a conversation, both inter- and intra-generational about what it's like to live in such a polarizing and confusing moment in time as the 2020's.

Finally, there's no better time than right now. The chance to write a script and bring it to the big screen at the age of nineteen is quite literally once in a lifetime. While there are films out there made about young people, it's almost never people their age making them. My point of view and perspective at this age on this topic is truly unique in the industry, leaving this film in a position to resonate with others with a lasting impact in the years to come.

At its core, this feature is a chance to break everything I’ve ever thought creatively possible and create something that can truly only be made right now, all while the perspective, story, and experience are still relevant and important in today's conversations.

Location - $3000 - Set in a campground in a coastal town, with the climax at a carnival, location is absolutely critical for the film. We've rented a house for the family's home, an amusement park for the carnival, and are in the process of rounding out the rest of the locations.

Cast - $4,400 - We're doing everything we can to ensure we can afford a really great cast and pay them fairly. Our paid roles are Sarah, Levi, Andrew, Mom, and Dad.

Crew - $5,000 - A 12-day feature film shoot requires a big team. The majority of our crew will be students volunteering their time, but we need to pay some critical positions to ensure a smooth production process.

Equipment - $1,400 - We will utilize equipment from team members and the school, this is everything left over.

Food - $700 - Need to eat!

Insurance - $500 - Not really much fun, but it's a necessity.

Travel/Lodging - $1000 - With locations all over New England, travel will be unavoidable, so this will go towards keeping everyone near set and reimbursing travel expenses.

Additional - $500 - Funding towards set/costume design and initial music licensing.

$16,500 - Our base level goal, everything we absolutely need to bring this project to life: cast, crew, locations, equipment, food, some travel expenses, and insurance. We need at least 80% of this target ($13,200) to keep the money we raised up to this point.

$18,000 - A little extra to help cover travel and lodging expenses for cast and crew to stay on set throughout the shooting weekends, giving us more time to focus on the film and stay rested.

$20,000 - Help pay our crew! Most of our crew is generously volunteering their time to the project, so the extra money would help compensate them for their time and crucial work.

>$20,000 - Better compensate our cast, cover any additional unexpected expenses, and start to contribute towards post-production expenses.
