Story
Mission Statement
Created by and for creatives of color, "Sundown "explores themes of mental health and wellbeing, specifically within underrepresented communities. This coming-of-age thriller presents a fantastical, yet relatable story about overcoming inner strife for adolescent and young adult audiences alike.About The Project
Sundown is a coming-of-age thriller short about Mikey, a young boy from Baltimore, and the lifelong consequences of disobeying his mother and staying out too late one night.
One night, while Mikey and his mother are moving out of their Baltimore home, they get into an argument regarding their family's past. After the dispute, Mikey's mother leaves the apartment, but not before warning him not to stay out past sunset. Mikey ultimately ignores her and returns home to a visit from a Creature that haunts him through his young adulthood.
As a child, Mikey has his whole life ahead of him. As an adult, Mikey lives in fear after his encounter with the Creature in his childhood. His mother has since passed, leaving him without an immediate family. Mikey lives alone in Baltimore City and clearly struggles with his mental health, having succumbed to a destructive lifestyle. Mikey eventually reaches out for help and finds another opportunity to encounter the Creature. Mikey must make a choice to take back his life… will he make the right one?
As I explore my personal style as a filmmaker, I want to create compelling, people-driven stories across all my work. I am driven to stories centered around dynamic characters and their intimate emotional journeys. Sundown explores the transformation of carefree youth into calloused adulthood during 15 minutes of trials, tribulations, thrills, and triumph.
Through Sundown and Mikey's story, I speak directly to audiences who have personal experiences with trauma and various other strifes with mental health, including myself. The title “Sundown” alludes to the existence of “sundown towns” in the United States that implement de facto segregation with signage ushering people of color out of the town after sunset. I use this concept as a foundation to explore a story about a Black teenager who experiences struggles with his mental well-being after staying out past sunset, enduring a unique trauma he must overcome.
Sundown reflects a growing cultural awareness of mental health struggles, specifically within communities of color and during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Having a predominantly Black cast and diverse production team was important to reflect the cultural authenticity the project aims to represent. Furthermore, Sundown aims to contribute to the conversation regarding the destigmatization of mental health and emotional well-being.
Most importantly, Sundown is my short film directorial debut.
The film has allowed me to step further into the world of filmmaking and explore new genres and storylines, as well as pushed me to enjoy new creative experiences. I am grateful for the opportunity to bring this project to life with the help of my incredible cast and crew. Sundown is an incredibly personal project, not only in its subject matter, but in that it has helped push me beyond my comfort zone to develop my creative storytelling abilities. I am excited to bring this story to the big screen later this year and bring everyone into the world of Mikey and his journey.
- Cierra Gladden, writer & director
Young Mikey is a 13-year-old only child from Baltimore who lives with his single mother and is a dangerous combination of stubborn and naïve. One night, he gets into an argument with his mother and disobey's her warning not to stay out past dark. What waits for him when he returns home threatens to haunt him into his early adulthood.
Mikey's Mother, in her late 30s, is a newly single parent who lives with her only child, Mikey. After a dispute while moving out of their Baltimore home, Mikey's mother warns him not to stay out past dark. When Mikey defies her, they both suffer the consequences, leaving Mikey wracked with guilt.
Adult Mikey; After his encounter with the Creature years ago, Mikey has succumbed to a life of reclusiveness, bitterness, and destructive habits. However, after hard discussions with his therapist, he eventually wants more than just to float through life. Ultimately, Mikey seeks to gain control of his mental health and face the Creature again, once and for all.
The Creature is a psychological manifestation of Mikey’s fears, guilt, and unspoken past. After Mikey disobeys his mother’s warnings not to stay out past dark, the Creature pays him a visit and leaves him with lasting consequences throughout his young adulthood.
Dr. Kessler is Mikey’s therapist, and pillar of support, whom he sees after being recommended therapeutic care by his psychiatrist. Dr. Kessler encourages Mikey to choose between working through his trauma or continuing to live in fear of the Creature indefinitely.
Sundown wrapped production in August 2022! We are currently in post-production with plans to edit through the 2022 year for a final cut in Spring 2023! Since we want to perfect the quality of a coming-of-age thriller, much of our budget will go towards post-production mixing, scoring, and coloring, all defining aspects of every successful film in this genre.
Our incredible team is hard at work transforming our footage into a rough cut before sending it out to professionals for the final stages of post-production. Check out our pitch video for a sneak peek at some real production footage!
We plan to premiere Sundown in April 2023 and submit to festivals for the 2023-2024 cycle.
