A father-to-be confronts his own father’s worsening Alzheimer’s–and finds unexpected beauty inside his dad’s new reality. A film about how we time-travel in our minds. About the seductive appeal of nostalgia. And about finding the courage to see our parents for who they are--as they are--right now.

Mission Statement

Sundown aims to illuminate an otherwise solitary event - the inevitable act of losing one’s parents. This private pain so easily leads to isolation. As an alternative, the film argues for a path toward connection, of seeing family for who they are in the present moment.

The Story

Hey. We’re Miles and Will. We met in college, and we’ve been friends since, sharing life’s ups and downs together.

One night about 6 years ago, we discovered we shared a pretty big down: our fathers were sick.

Needless to say, we grew even closer–but we also realized we wanted to make something together out of our experiences and conversations.

So we started writing.

And writing.

And being very confused with what we were writing.

But then writing more.

In the meantime, life continued to happen: Miles’s father’s Alzheimer’s progressed, Will got married; Miles’s son was born, Will’s father passed away. These major life changes continued to shape and reshape the story we were trying to tell.

Our co-producer Nicole Payson came aboard, sudden insights from our director Katrina Whalen and cinematographer Andrew Trost flipped the script on its head, and after another six months…we had something.

Sundown is a film with deeply personal touches, blending in authentic home video footage from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, family pictures and mementos from the cast and crew, and unfortunately, real-world experience with mortality and memory loss.

But we believe there’s something universal in there too. We all, at one point or another, will realize just how fragile our parents (or parental figures) are. And we’ll all experience the confusion of taking on new roles in their life as we get older. Maybe as a peer. Maybe as a caretaker.

This is a film about how we time-travel in our minds. About the seductive appeal of nostalgia. And about finding the courage to see each other for who we are–as we are–right now.

Devin, a man in his 30s, visits his parents for the weekend with big news. But before he arrives, his mother warns him: his father Noah’s Alzheimer’s has progressed to the point where he sometimes thinks he’s younger…and sometimes doesn’t recognize his own family.

And if that happens?

Don’t contradict him. Be in his reality. Play along.

When Devin finally does, he finds revelation, joy, heartbreak, and eventually, a new understanding of his dad.

In mid-November, under the leadership of our producers Eden Ohayon and Molly Ehrenberg-Peters, we shot Sundown in Miles’s mutli-generational family home on Cape Cod with an incredible team of 30. We were simply overwhelmed that something so private and personal had grown into a project that drew the remarkable talent and personal creativity of so many.

We were joined in front of the camera by three wonderful actors: Grainger Hines (The Knick, Lincoln, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs) gracefully took on the mantle of Older Noah; Carmen Flood (Chicago Med, Long Slow Exhale) brought effortless charm to Devin’s wife Sophia, and Anna Holbrook (Law and Order: SVU, The Equalizer) gave Devin’s mother Kathryn warmth and strength.

Everyone involved showed up on set every day committed to telling this intimate story to the best of their ability. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect to be surrounded by so much focus, joy, and dedication.

And now we’re in post-production - a time in a film’s journey where we all take what we have shot and turn it into a finished film!

We must assemble the images, color grade the footage, develop a score and sound design and so much more.

Currently, our wonderful editor Beth Moran (The Gilded Age) is deep into the footage, and we are already blown away by what she and Kat are assembling.

This is a really exciting time, and we can’t wait to finally see what we have spent so many years trying to make.

This is where you come in.

We are so close to the finish line.

We’re not asking you to contribute to a vision or concept. The film is in the can, and edits have already begun. But we can't finish it without you!

A quality post-production does not come cheap. So much time and care has gone into this film, and we need you to help us finish telling this story.

Here is a sense of where your money will come in and the kind of impact you could directly make:

STRETCH GOALS:

  • 15k+ Submit to more festivals! There are so many wonderful festivals throughout the country and beyond, and this level of fundraising would give this film the best opportunity to be seen by more audiences.
  • 17k+ Festival badges! This level of fundraising would help us pay for more cast and crew to access these festivals with us.
  • 20k+ Marketing! There are so many great films out there, and this fundraising would help us create a marketing campaign to cut through the noise.

And tell your friends! Even if you can't donate, getting the word out there can be a huge help.
