Surra is a satirical horror short about cultural fetishization and obsession over “authentic” experiences. In a moment when identity is curated, consumed, and monetized, this film uses genre to confront who gets to define culture — and at what cost.

Mission Statement

The mission of Surra is to locate the line where cultural celebration becomes fetishization — and obliterate it through horror, satire, and absurdity. By embracing discomfort and comedy, the film examines how the image of Brazilian people is distorted through the American gaze.

The Story

An American serial killer obsessed with “authentic” cultural experiences traps a Brazilian couple in his sauna and forces them to dance… to the death.

Collin is an American serial killer with a carefully curated appetite. He collects victims by ethnicity, chasing cultural experiences that he deems “authentic.”

In 2010, Collin discovers Surra de Bunda — a niche Brazilian dance that briefly circulates online before disappearing from the mainstream. For Collin, it becomes an obsession. He waits. He studies. He convinces himself that one day, he’ll experience it the “right” way.

Fifteen years later, when his attempts repeatedly fall short, Collin kidnaps a Brazilian couple, certain they can finally give him what he’s been denied.

They can’t.

Surra uses horror and dark comedy to explore how cultural curiosity curdles into entitlement — and how obsession, when left unchecked, turns violent.

Here's a quick Portuguese lesson.

Surra de bunda (Soo-Ha Day Boon-Dah) - or “butt whooping” for our gringo friends - is a 2010s Brazilian funk dance, where traditionally a woman places her feet on a man's shoulders and repeatedly slams her gluteal muscles into his face, often to delightful and disastrous consequences. Dude in the picture broke his arm!

We are building this from the ground up and your pledges will ultimately decide if and how we can make this movie. We have a script that we are VERY excited to shoot and a handful of dedicated lunatics ready to get to slamming.

Currently, we are searching for locations and team members who can bring this to life. This is where you come in. If you want to help us reach our goals, you can:

PLEDGE!

A pledge is the most direct and impactful way to help us reach our goal. Any amount — no matter how small — helps bring Surra to life and ensures our dedicated cast and crew are paid what they deserve.

FOLLOW!

Not ready to pledge yet? No worries. Following the campaign still helps us tremendously by boosting visibility and spreading the word about Surra. Plus, you’ll get updates as we head into production.

SHARE!

Help us spread the word about Surra! Tell your friends, family, randos on the street, pets with bank accounts — anyone who might be interested.

Every share helps more people discover the film, and we’re deeply grateful for everyone helping this weird little movie exist.

Every pledge helps us cut a slice out of this pie.

These are the lead characters of the film.

We are currently still casting them, a few other supporting roles, and a few other surprises...

Crew Fees

Costs $6,000

Without a crew telling the actors what to do, they would all wander off into the woods to hide from the harsh lighting. Help keep them safe.

Talent

Costs $3,000

This movie really does not work without actors. It would just be a weird dance documentary, I guess?

Equipment

Costs $2,000

Without camera and lights, you can't see the movie! It would have to be some sort of play. And you deserve better than a play.

Catering & Crafty

Costs $1,000

Some people believe that 9 out of 10 people die without food. We are not taking any chances so we have decided to feed everyone.

Production Design

Costs $3,000

Practical effects! Tubs of fake blood! Exploding heads! A custom built sauna set! All that good stuff.

Post Production

Costs $1,500

You make a movie, then you edit that movie. Sound, color, scores, and songs all make this movie complete.

Locations

Costs $1,500

We need a place to shoot the movie. We haven't figured out how to film outside of time and space...yet.
