The Story
Tales of the sea is a drama fantasy following a 12 year old boy after he loses his family and is sent to live with his grumpy grandfather, and his worker, on the coast. During the first night the boy is warned to stay off the beaches after dark and to never approach anything or anyone he sees, no matter how tempting. The old man says there is a women who will say and do anything to get close enough with someone in order to drag them into the ocean. During his time here he grows close with his grandfathers worker, a 21 year old man who grew up at this lighthouse. The young man tells the boy stories and tales of what being a sailor is like: the adventure, the treasure, the myths, and the legends. When the young man decides to leave he promises the boy one thing, that he will come back to take him out to sea once he knows his way around it. The boy, struggling with the loneliness of his situation looks for support in anyone or anything. Leading him to speak with the ghostly women that roams the beaches at night. The women gives the boy someone to talk with, someone to feel free around, but is she truly a kind spirit, or is she doing exactly what the grandfather warned about?

Why us?
Growing up in Oregon, going to the coast was a special part of our lives. There is something about the Oregon coast that holds beauty and a mystery. Our goal is to capture that feeling within the film using the environment and setting as its own character. Everyone on the cast and crew has a deep connection to the Oregon coast and I speak for all of us when I say it holds a special place in our hearts. That's why we are going for the EMA Green Seal For Production, holding ourselves to a higher standard of environmental care! So why us? Because we care!

Where we are at
We have been in pre-production for a little over 5 months now and we have only grown more excited about this project.
A few things we have done are

- Designed promotional graphics
- Shot promotional videos and test shoots
A few things we are currently working on are
- The original score for Tales Of The Sea
- Working with the Oregon State Parks on finalizing the permit process
- Locating hotels
- Gathering props
- Costume design and wardrobe
Where your money would go
These expenses stack up and your donations would help us wrap up pre-production and move forward into production. These donations help with things like camera rentals, allowing us to capture the true beauty of the story we want to tell, house and feed our actors and crew, and finalize permits allowing us to shoot legally, safely, and respectfully!
Characters

The Boy - A 12 year old boy who was born and raised in Salem Oregon, forced to move in with his grandfather. He is a nervous kid that doesn't fit in to the rough and gritty life style of a lighthouse keeper, constantly looking for a way to spend his time.
The Young Man - A 21 year old man who grew up at the lighthouse. The old man took him in when he was very young, he knows nothing besides the lighthouse and the work that comes with it. When he's not working he spends his time reading stories about the open ocean and the adventures that come with it. He doesn't plan to wait around for his life to get better, he plans to adventure out to the open sea where he can discover all the same things they talk about in the books he reads.
The Old Man - When he was only 23 years old he had his first daughter, two years later when him and his wife were expecting their second child he got a letter from his dying father. After many arguments and tears he was forced to move to the coast, where he took care of his father at the lighthouse. Never returning home to see the two daughters or wife he left behind.
The Woman - An elusive being known to prey on lonely sailors.
Original Score
For Tales of the sea we have Julia Gunter working on an Original Score. So far she has done great at capturing the eerie unsettling feeling we want in the short film.
Themes
Isolation - Each of these characters find their own way to handle this lonely and isolated feeling, the same way we all do. The boy looks for support in others, making an effort to feel better even if it puts himself at risk. The young man dreams of the sea and the freedom that comes with it. He reads stories and tales imagining what could be waiting for him, until he finally decides to go. The old man has accepted his life and did so many years ago, he warns against both going out to sea and speaking with the women, he gave up on any dreams or hope for escape and settled with what he was given.
Temptation - The Boy, despite being warned against it, speaks with the woman because she listens. Even if we get away with something once that doesn't guarantee our safety if we do it again. The young man spends his time reading of the tales and legends of sailors, leading him to ignore what he has and follow in there footsteps, aspiring for something more then what he's known all of his life. We, like the young man, have a hard time not comparing ourselves to others. We highlight the people that succeed while the ones that don't never get there story written. Sometimes we need to find happiness in where we are.
