Tennis is a short comedy that pokes fun at the intricacies of social interactions and how specificity can actually lead to more misunderstandings in a relationship. The script is quick and snappy, with an incredibly funny cast to support it.

Mission Statement

Tennis's main protagonist is Calvin, a man who has finally found someone who he feels comfortable exploring his diverse sexuality with. Unfortunately, it is his best friend's sister, therefore Calvin must choose between losing the person who he found his sexuality with, or losing his best friend.

The Story

SYNOPSIS

Tennis is a short film about Calvin and Chester, two friends that love to play tennis together. All is well until Calvin begins sleeping with Chester's sister, causing a rift in the friendship between Calvin and Chester. The problem is, Calvin loves tennis! Calvin wants to play tennis every day of his entire life, and Chester won't play with him if Calvin is having sex with Chester's sister. Therefore, Calvin must choose between losing his friendship with Chester, or losing the one woman who understands and enjoys Calvin's true sexual desires.

BUT WHY?

Tennis is a passion project between all of us on the crew. The original draft of the script was written fairly quickly on a couch last year, and it was immediately apparent that it was a promising story. Although it is a short script, Tennis highlights the emotional tug that happens when someone must choose between losing one person or another.

Tennis also showcases the irrational behavior of people who are forced to choose between two unfavorable outcomes, as well as how perspective can alter the perceived morality of a situation.

We have a wonderful crew of passionate individuals who are dedicated to the vision of this project and are excited to get to work. Everyone working on the shoot is an undergrad student at Chapman University, including the director (me), producer, cinematographer (as well as the entire camera crew), editor, production designers, costume designer, and sound designers.

OUR KEY CREW

DIRECTOR: PHILIP STILWELL

My name is Philip Stilwell and I'm the director of this film. Above is a photo of my face. I'm a junior film production major at Chapman University (with an emphasis in directing). I'm working on this film with a lot incredibly talented humans who share my passions. Because of this, I believe that we will all be able to come together to succesfully create this funny, lighthearted, emotionally honest film about two long time friends dealing with newfound turmoil in their relationship.

PRODUCER: RACHEL GYSIN

Rachel Gysin is our wonderful producer. Even though this is my first time working with her, she has proven to be incredibly passionate, proactive, and economic in the conceptualization and execution of this project. It is because of Rachel that everything has been, and still is, going so smoothly while working on the pre-production of Tennis.

CINEMATOGRAPHER: JACKIE DOMI

Jackie Domi is our wonderfully talented cinematographer who will be in charge of the camera team and shooting Tennis. She has a great eye and will be bringing a lot of interesting concepts to the table regarding shot composition and lighting. With plenty of on-set experience, and her personal connection to the film, she was the natural fit for our cinematographer.

PRODUCTION DESIGN: BRYCE NEVILLE/GARNET BURK

Bryce and Garnet are our incredibly talented production designers. With professional experience on music videos under their belt, as well as plenty of student films, it was natural that they would be our first choice to bring onto the project. Bryce and Garnet have a unique eye that is going to make this film pop and stick in the minds of the audience members.

WARDROBE: LINDSEY REMPALSKI

Lindsey is our talented costume designer. Although she doesn't traditionally work on film sets, her successful YouTube career which centers around clothing and makeup makes her the perfect individual to be outfitting our characters. Lindsey is acutely aware of the impact and implications of wardrobe design, and we're excited to have her on the project to dress our characters.

EDITOR: PAYTON KOCH

With an eye for the cut, and a personal connection to the project, Payton was our first pick for editor. Payton has professional experience editing films, with a feature and plenty of shorts under his belt. In addition, he is incredibly perceptive of tone, and could be trusted with nearly any genre of film placed in front of him. We're confident that Payton will be able to make the best of whatever footage comes from our shoot days.
