Mission Statement

Horror films can often provide escapism for the viewer in a thrilling way that transports them away from the issues of everyday life. Our team wants to create a powerful story that shines light on mental health issues young adults face, while also providing immersive escapism for our viewers.

The Story

What is The Backrooms?
The Backrooms is an urban legend describing an endless maze of randomly generated office rooms and other environments. Since its original creation in 2019, The Backrooms has been expanded into various other forms of media and Internet culture, including video games, collaborative fiction wikis, and Youtube videos.

The Backrooms Game Wiki page describes the Backrooms as "nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approzimately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented rooms to be trapped in."

Our Story
Our main character Amelia is a young adult living in a middle to lower class apartment with her boyfriend. Amelia is experiencing a lot of emotions and internal conflict that many young people go through, including depression, self doubt, and anxiety. She has a talent for art, but the strains on her mental health have caused her to put her passions aside. While Amelia has a very supporting boyfriend, only she can be the one to pull herself out of her own head. When Amelia finds herself stuck in The Backrooms, she will have to do just that, both literally and figuratively.

The Rake
The Rake is often depicted as a strange, human-like creature who is unusually tall, hairless, and pale. It generally crouches or crawls on all fours. The creature reportedly attacks for no known reasons, causing its victims a great deal of pyschological traumas. The Rake has also been tied to alternate lore, such as the likes of Slender Man. The Rake is an urban legend in itself that has made appearances in The Backrooms lore. In our narrative, the creature is representative of someone who's been stuck in the Backrooms for centuries and eventually turned into the Rake. Metaphorically, it also represents the disturbed mental voices that have existed inside of Amelia's head throughout her depression.

Understanding the Film
At it's core, The Backrooms is an allegory for depression, anxiety, and many other mental health disorders and/or issues that can be easily found within society today, but especially in young adults. According to National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), young adults aged 18-25 years had the highest prevalence of having any mental illness (30.6%) compared to adults aged 26-49 years (25.3%) and aged 50 and older (14.5%). With all the stressors going on in Amelia's life, it is very easy for her to fall into a dark place—both mentally and physically—thus, setting our story right in the Backrooms.

Breaking Barriers
This project seeks to push the modern day urban legend into new territory through filming on real locations and using practical effects, building upon the already established "found footage" videos and written lore about the Backrooms. It is our team's goal to create this narrative story to further the world of the Backrooms and influence others to create narratively driven additions to the SCP Foundation lore as well. We hope this film paves the way for other filmmakers to feel encouraged to create live action adaptations of other urban legends, too.
