Mission Statement

It's important to tell this story of an intergenerational machine knitting community that uses the internet to document and share knowledge. This is a critical moment to capture a curious and incredible exchange because a large group of the characters are - in their own words - “old ladies.”

Help spread the word by sharing:

“The Domestic Machine” is a feature film that will capture a glimpse into the world of devoted camaraderie found in online knitting communities. A niche craft technique with a cult following tells a larger story about the power of how the internet can be used to archive dwindling knowledge, foster community, and connect otherwise disconnected people across the globe.

Format:

This out-of-production 20th-century knitting machine has been kept alive by a small cult following with lo-fi YouTube tutorials made by rural female baby boomers. This has generated renewed interest in machine knitting and inspired the likes of social media influencers and posh fashion designers of Gen-Zers and Millennials.

Our feature will include personal interviews and verité (intimate in-the-moment) experiences with many of these community pioneers.

Our film will dissect and discover firsthand from these pioneers just how they came to hold these positions within the knitting community - and in some cases learn if they even are aware of their great impact!

“The Domestic Machine” will juxtapose your idea of knitters to the endless possibilities it has made for creative spaces today. Throughout the film we will meet our characters from the older generations to the new-school Millenials and Gen-Zers, discovering how they use the domestic knitting machine in their homes, workspaces, and the world at large.

Ultimately, our film plans to create a space of gathering for these seemingly far-reaching communities and trailblazers: A cross-generational bridge founded on a shared love and commitment to a niche craft.

Why now?

Many of these digital knitters are getting older -- as this happens, we are slowly seeing parts of this domestic knitting machine world disappear.

 PRODUCTION AND BEGIN POST-PRODUCTION

Status

We are currently in the pre-production phase!

What does that mean? We have assembled our characters, researched knitting machines, written the doc's script, and partnered with Indigo Collective as our film collaborators and production team.

We are now solidifying our finances as we get ready to jump into the production (AKA shooting phase) of the film. These funds will create a budget that supports production travel to film our characters, secure studio space, and rent our camera equipment.

Once we get the film in the can (AKA when we're done filming!), our remaining budget will support the beginning of post-production (i.e editing, sound mix, color correction, and music).

We plan to submit our completed film to film festivals and showcases around the world, and most importantly create a viewing just for YOU - our wonderful community!

Stay with us along the way for updates via this platform and social media!

COVID Policy

We will be following COVID safety onset protocols in line with the current industry-wide requirements during production.

From The Directors

As textile artists, storytellers, and educators we know the vernacular and the industry and therefore, we understand what needs to be included for this to be an accurate telling. More than that, however, this is personal for us. We have come to love these machine knitters because they gave us knowledge that has changed our practice as artists in tremendous ways. The newer generation of knitters are our friends, students, and colleagues. This is our community and we are deeply committed to generating an accurate account of their contributions to our field to inspire the next generation of knitters and beyond.
