The Story
Imagine a place where ancient ideas spark modern minds.
Where real conversation and collaboration bring ideas to life.
Where students challenge each other and defend their own ideas using critical thinking.
The Integral Program is about learning to learn, teaching students how to think, developing their capacity for original and independent thought.
Unlike traditional academic college programs, the Integral Program takes students on a cohesive and interconnected journey over four years.
The curriculum covers 4,000 years of history, literature and philosophy with students actively engaging with each other and with original works, not textbooks.
There are no lectures or exams.
Students participate in seminars and tutorials where they engage in active dialogue with faculty and peers.
In strong contrast to lecture-based approaches, the emphasis is on discussion and hands-on exploration.
It’s not for everyone, but as a graduate of the program, I can attest to the power of learning to question and respect different viewpoints. I vividly recall the exhilaration of demonstrating Euclid's Book I, Proposition 12—a complex geometric proof—in front of my peers. (To draw a straight line perpendicular to a given infinite straight line from a given point not on it.)
This documentary captures the dedication and depth of commitment the tutors have for students and the texts. Both Mike and Steve graduated from the Program and have been teaching and facilitating seminar reading list conversations for over 40 years. The list includes Homer, Sappho, Plato, Aristotle, Euclid, Ptolemy, the Bible, St. Augustine, Dante Cervantes, Descartes, Austen, Hegel, Dostoevsky, and Confucius to name a few.
Instead of reading these texts as parts of separate fields, the Integral Program reads them as parts of coherent traditions of thought that allow students to see more clearly how these texts and traditions illuminate each other.
Enrollment is declining.
Machine learning and AI are replacing dialogue and discovery.
The spark of encouraging young minds to search for what truly is is at risk of going out.
Help us make this film to capture the enduring legacy of the Integral Program and inspire the next generation to carry on this unique way of learning.
On May 10, we want to film Steve’s last annual Brother Sixtus Robert Lecture at Saint Mary's College as a tutor and interview students and alumni about their experiences in the Program. The funds raised during this campaign will cover travel, equipment, and filming. We need additional funds for post-production editing and distribution to bring this film to audiences.
This is a project of love. Join us in preserving this exceptional program. Your support is critical.
