This is a story about the societal pressures we place on student athletes to push them selves to their physical and mental limits as a measurement of success. This pressure can be most harmful when it's coming from within the athlete's family.

Mission Statement

On the day of her big match, a young Fencer must deal with a medical emergency and a father who will stop at nothing for her to succeed. "The Fencer" explores the psychological pressures that young athletes are under and the personal sacrifices they make to succeed.

The Story

The Fencer is a narrative short film that follows Gabbie, a 17-year-old that has already become one of the most promising fencers in the country. She's led by her father and coach, Enzo, who is determined to give her the athletic opportunities he never had. But just before one of the most important matches of her career, she's struck by a medical emergency. She must make a choice: either forfeit the match and crush her father’s aspirations for her, or continue the competition and risk worsening her condition. Gabbie has to confront her reasons for giving everything to this sport and who she could be without it.

Why this film? Why Now?

The Fencer is a fictional story that draws inspiration from Alyssa Lomuscio's experiences as a nationally-ranked and NCAA All-American fencer. After training through her adolescence she became one of the top 10 foil fencers in the United States by age 20. Throughout her decade long career she faced a multitude of personal and professional obstacle that motivated our story.
