Mission Statement

The Gig is about what happens when you’re not headlining a Vegas casino but can still entertain and unite people of all walks of life with magic. It’s harder than ever to commodify passion, and the road to making a living leads us to the wildest corners of our communities .

The Story

Matt, a young, struggling magician, has been allured by magic since his youth. At yet another lackluster children’s gig Matt tries to dazzle the room, particularly the uninterested parents, with his craft by pushing his act to another level. However, his attempts yield no reward. With his confidence defeated and his dreams of becoming a world renowned magician feeling farther away than ever, Matt heads back to his home turf, an eccentric magic shop at the heart of New York City. There, an unexpected high-profile booking appears, offering him a chance to really prove himself.

At the glamorous gig, Matt performs for an infamous up-and-coming rapper and his posse. He attempts to seize the moment but his performance backfires, leaving him publicly humiliated by the very crowd he hoped would be his ticket to success. A small encounter unexpectedly reawakens Matt’s spark, and a viral moment suggests his failure may actually be the opening to something beyond his imagination… or maybe not.

This introductory installment of a comedy series reminiscent of Donald Glover’s Atlanta and Ben Sinclair’s High Maintenance, puts Matt at the center of this niche world of magic, surrounded by an even larger current-day New York and all the unique encounters the city offers.

The Gig, through its tricks, twists, and irreverent comedy, is a powerful story of artistic yearning. Matt represents a generation of young artists trying to make a living in the digital age, advancing his craft in a world that sees it as bygone and tired. The pilot strips the magic world of its novelty status and explores it as a living ecosystem of vibrant personalities and devotion despite countless odds, Matt himself at the forefront of its transition to a fresh, daunting new domain. What Crashing did for stand-up, what The Bear did for the culinary world, The Gig wants to do for modern magicians.

Your help bringing this project to life will not only allow the creation of the pilot but the possibility for an ongoing series exploring this dynamic, hilarious world. Magic doesn’t just entertain, it transports audiences. There’s nothing quite like the spellbinding feeling of seeing a trick you can’t understand, a hidden card, a disappearing rabbit… We want you to feel the thrill again and again, every episode and as soon as possible. With our brilliant cast and crew (pictured below!) at the ready and the support of Tisch School of the Arts behind us, there’s no better time than now to take The Gig from page to screen.
