Mission Statement

Bloodthirsty, humanoid mantodea aside, THE GIRL AND THE MANTIS is ultimately about survival under the circumstances of unideal parental control - a meditation on divorce, parents and fractured familial relationships. As well as the notion that our parents might be fattening us up so we taste better.

The Story

THE GIRL AND THE MANTIS is a body horror about GIRL; a naive 12-year-old being forced to stay at her estranged father’s apartment for the weekend. Determined to survive the night and prove her mother wrong about how “weak” she is, the GIRL keeps her wits about her during a tense dinner and investigates her father’s house after waking to strange noises.

But when the GIRL uncovers horrific secrets about who her father is, she must survive a deadly interaction with him and push herself to be brave against the odds. If she fails, she gets EATEN.

While $6,758 is the minimum amount we need to bring our film to life, additional funds — a stretch goal — would afford us superior filmmaking capabilities and ensure that The Girl and the Mantis reaches the widest audience possible.

Here is what an expanded budget will achieve:

  • Raising $8,000 would go towards further enhancing production design, specifically as it relates to developing the aesthetic cadence of our titular monster's lair
  • Raising $10,000 would enable us to invest in more expensive, atmospheric locations that require heavy-duty transport/lodging
  • Raising $14,000 would go towards all of the costs mentioned above, as well as allaying any unforeseen expenses
