Redactions, coverups, misinformation. These forces underpin the fabric weaving our lives today. However, these are ancient forces; just as they exist today, they existed in Salem in the 1800s. Talene Monahon's 'The Good John Proctor,' explores the lives, the magic, and the nightmares of girlhood.

The Story
Synopsis:
The Good John Proctor is a new play that offers a new look at the lead-up to the Salem Witch Trials, imagining the inner lives of the real girls at the center of the trials as they hurtle toward the events dramatized in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Abigail Warren, age eleven, and Betty Parris, age nine and a half, are best friends. There’s also Mercy Lewis, the child alcoholic, and Mary Warren, who shakes for no reason. The girls churn butter, play with poppets, and listen to The Woods at night. But their world is turned upside-down when Abigail starts to work for a farmer named John Proctor. Playwright Talene Monahon brings these familiar names to new life as the young women of Salem navigate the nature of Satan and the bloody trials of adolescence.

Why This Story Now:
As a Creative Team, our work is built on the values of joy and rigor. We are devoted to producing high-quality, experimental theatre that serves as a means to healing and community building. The Good John Proctor sheds light on the stickiness of adolescence, providing representation to those whose fears and negative experiences have been diminished or written off as “dramatic” and “untrue.” We are fueled by the opportunity to curate a theatrical experience in which collaborators and audience members alike can feel the viscerality of adolescence from rigidity to release.

Financial Support:
Financial support and assistance from Seed & Spark donors will be used immediately in the following ways: paying for a performance venue, supplementing artist stipends, sourcing props and set pieces, and printing programs, posters, and additional promotional materials. Each of these factors will help nurture our creative vision and provide patrons with a positive, high-quality theatrical experience.
