The Story

"My dad started getting sick when he was forty years old. Before then, I have memories of him as this driven, gregarious, and loving man with a palpable and sarcastic sense of humor. When he entered a room, you could feel it. His presence, his warmth, was big. And I always remember him like that. When he got sick he had to stop working as an attorney, he could hardly do any of the things he once loved. He became paranoid, and even violent at times, when he never was before. After he died, at age 48, we learned he had early-onset Alzheimer's. This disease, it didn't merely kill him, but it robbed him of everything that made him who he was when he was alive. Years later, my siblings and I would realize his disease....was entirely genetic." - Jack Rankin, writer of The Inheritance.
Based on the true story of his father, Bill Rankin, The Inheritance follows Jack, a young physician, his wife Emma (Renee Kauffman), and his siblings, Sam (Sarah Yoakley) and Donny (Jamie Kilstein) as they are blindsided in the wake of their father's death to discover that they may share the same genetic fate. This is particularly frightening as Jack and Emma are trying to have a baby. As they grapple with their own mortality in this irreverent and darkly comedic short they must fight for their future and, indeed, for each other.
Unfortunately, Jack's story is not unique. According to the Alzheimer's Association, 6.9 million people age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's disease, plus an additional 200,000 under 65 living with early-onset Alzheimer's. This doesn't even account for people living with other forms of dementia, or the approximately 11.5 million people acting as caregivers for their loved ones. Alzheimer's is an ugly and cruel disease, not only for the diagnosed individual, but for their loved ones who have to watch them slip away long before they're really gone. In telling stories like Bill's and Jack's, we can remember who they were before the disease. In keeping their memories alive through storytelling, we can give them a legacy much bigger than any disease. In remembering, there is life.

ith so many causes out there, we know what a big deal it is that you're choosing ours and want to honor your contribution by ensuring that you know your investment is in good hands. We will be fully transparent with you every step of the way from the moment you hit the pledge button all the way up until the film lights up the silver screen! And that starts....now! Below you will find a breakdown of how we intend to utilize your pledges. First and foremost, we believe in fair and equitable wages for our cast and crew who are giving overwhelmingly and generously of their time and talents to this project, which is why it's such a significant part of our budget. We believe that if you prioritize your people, they will always give you a better project.
In addition to paying our cast and crew, we will need to pay for two locations, meals and crafty, production insurance, and rental gear. We will be shooting over the course of four days in the Austin area. We are ensuring that not a single penny is going to waste and will be able to save some costs by shooting in Jack's home for about 2/3 of the script. Beyond that, we are aiming to support our local community as much as possible by renting small mom-and-pop locations for the remainder of the shoot, renting local for all of our gear needs, and providing meals from local restaurants and stores. In pledging to our campaign you are not only supporting our team and our film, but about a dozen local business, too.
This budget ensures that ALL of our production expenses will be completely covered and enables us to tell this story in the way it deserves to be told. We cannot do this without YOU and are so thankful for your contribution!
