The Story
THE LAST ROBOT
What would a machine created to replace people teach us about being human?
In a world devastated by war and environmental collapse, Fredrick is one of the last people alive.
An aging inventor who spent his life creating disposable military robots, Fredrick has dedicated himself to machines built for one purpose: to serve humanity until they are no longer needed.
After losing his wife, Kay, Fredrick creates something completely different.
RT is not designed to fight. is not designed to protect.
He is not designed to destroy.
Fredrick creates RT for companionship.
What begins as a technological experiment slowly becomes something much more personal.
As Fredrick and RT form a relationship, Fredrick is forced to confront the grief he has spent years trying to bury.
RT, meanwhile, begins to understand something his creator never expected a machine to understand: love, loss, and the importance of another life.
That is the heart of The Last Robot.
We are not interested in making another story about robots taking over the world.
We are interested in asking a much more human question:
What happens when the last person left in the world finds humanity in the one thing he was never supposed to see as human?
A STORY ABOUT WHAT REMAINS
At its core, The Last Robot is about what remains when everything else is gone.
It is about the people we lose, the things we create to remember them, and the unexpected relationships that can give us a reason to keep going.
The world around Fredrick may be falling apart, but the story is intentionally intimate.
This is not a story about saving the world.
It is about one person trying to find a reason to keep living in it.
And sometimes, that reason can come from the last place you would ever expect.
WHY THIS FILM MATTERS TO ME
For me, The Last Robot represents a return to filmmaking.
I have spent years working as a video editor and developing skills across visual effects, 3D, Unreal Engine, stop motion, compositing, and post production.
But filmmaking has always been the goal.
This project gives me the opportunity to bring all of those disciplines together in service of a story that is emotional first and technological second.
There is also something deeply personal about returning to filmmaking after spending so many years working behind the scenes.
I started making films when I was younger. Those early projects eventually led me into film school, editing, visual effects, and years of working professionally in video production.
Now I have the opportunity to take everything I have learned and put it back into the thing I wanted to do in the first place:
Make a film.
20+ YEARS OF MAKING
One of the most meaningful parts of this project is that it represents more than just the beginning of a new film.
It represents the continuation of a journey that started decades ago.
The early films I made were created with far fewer resources and a lot more ambition than experience. Those projects taught me something that has stayed with me ever since:
You do not need everything figured out to start making something.
Over the years, filmmaking evolved into editing, visual effects, 3D, compositing, and new technologies.
Now all of those pieces are coming back together.
The Last Robot is where the filmmaker I was, the filmmaker I became, and the filmmaker I am trying to become all meet.
BUILDING THE WORLD
The visual language of The Last Robot is just as important as the story.
We are intentionally combining handcrafted stop motion with modern techniques such as photogrammetry, Gaussian splatting, Unreal Engine environments, and visual effects.
But technology is never the point.
The technology should disappear into the world and allow the characters to remain at the center.
There is something appropriate about that approach.
RT is a machine.
But we want the audience to forget that when they are watching him.
We want them to see a character.
HANDCRAFTED MEETS THE FUTURE
Visually, we are building a world that feels tactile, imperfect, lonely, and lived in.
Every environment, prop, movement, and frame should feel intentional.
We want the audience to feel the weight of the world Fredrick has survived and the intimacy of the small relationship he builds with RT.
Our use of modern technology allows us to explore environments and visual techniques that would otherwise be extremely difficult for a small independent production.
Gaussian splatting and Unreal Engine can help us create and manipulate environments efficiently, while stop motion gives the characters and physical world a handcrafted quality.
The goal is to bring those two worlds together without losing the soul of either one.
THE ROBOTS
Before we can animate RT, we have to build him.
Our development phase will include the creation and refinement of three of our primary puppets, along with concept art, fabrication planning, storyboards, set development, and testing.
These early stages are critical.
Every puppet, prop, set, and shot has to be designed with animation in mind.
The development work we do now will establish the foundation for the larger production.
WHERE THE FUNDING GOES
The funds raised through this campaign will move The Last Robot from development into a fully planned production.
This phase will allow us to:
Develop the Characters
Refine the designs and begin development of three of the film's primary puppets.
Build the Visual World
Develop concept art, environments, props, and production designs.
Plan the Film
Create detailed storyboards that determine the sets, props, shots, and production requirements needed to bring the film to life.
Test the Technology
Develop and test our Gaussian splatting workflow and explore how it can make our production pipeline more efficient while preserving the handcrafted look of the film.
Prepare for Production
Use the development work as the foundation for larger scale investment and production financing.
FROM DEVELOPMENT TO PRODUCTION
Our goal is to begin this development work immediately after the campaign is funded.
This phase will prepare The Last Robot for larger scale investment and production financing.
We are targeting major production to begin around Christmas, with approximately one year of production planned for the short film.
That timeline includes the fabrication, set construction, animation, visual effects, post production, and finishing required to complete the film.
MORE THAN A SHORT FILM
The completed short film is designed to stand on its own.
But it is also the beginning of something larger.
The Last Robot represents the foundation for a larger world and a potential episodic story that we hope to develop beyond the short.
The characters, technology, environment, and mythology we establish in this film can become the foundation for a much larger cinematic universe.
Our goal with this campaign is not simply to raise money to make a film.
It is to build the first piece of a world that audiences can connect with and that we can continue developing.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Our long term funding goal is approximately $500,000.
That larger investment would allow us to fully produce the short with professional animators, set builders, artists, Unreal Engine specialists, and developers working on our Gaussian splatting techniques.
It would allow us to push The Last Robot beyond a traditional stop motion short and demonstrate its potential as a larger cinematic and episodic property.
But this campaign is where that journey begins.
Every puppet has to start somewhere.
Every set has to be built.
Every frame has to be captured.
And every story has to begin with someone deciding it is worth making.

About This Team
The Last Robot is being developed through Time To Fly Studios, with an incredible team of filmmakers and artists bringing together traditional filmmaking, stop motion, visual effects, 3D production, and emerging production technologies.
What makes this team special is that we are not starting from zero. We have already invested significant time developing the story, establishing the visual language, testing our production techniques, experimenting with the pipeline, and figuring out how to make this ambitious film achievable.
We have a strong creative core in place, and just as importantly, we have a deep Rolodex of talented filmmakers, artists, technicians, and industry professionals who can join the project as funding allows. These are people we know, trust, and would be excited to bring into the production.
As we reach each funding milestone, our goal is to strategically expand the team with the right people for the right stage of production. That means building a crew that is not only incredibly talented, but genuinely passionate about helping bring The Last Robot to life.
