The Story
Some of the heaviest things we carry are invisible.
We convince ourselves we're protecting the people we love by hiding our pain. We tell ourselves we'll ask for help tomorrow, next week, after things get better. Until one day, we realize the people who love us never wanted us to carry it alone.
That realization became The Line Between:
On her final day in New York City, a chronically ill woman chases a thief through a subway train, only to be transported into memories that force her to confront her relentless independence fractured her relationship with her younger sister.
THE ORIGINS - A PRODUCER'S STATEMENT
I thought protecting the people I loved meant hiding what I was going through.
In 2023, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life: I left Columbia University because of a chronic illness I had spent months hiding from almost everyone around me.
I had convinced myself that keeping my struggles private was the best way to protect the people I loved. Every doctor's appointment, every setback, and every difficult decision became another weight I refused to let anyone else carry. It wasn't until my final day in New York that I finally opened up about what I had been going through. That conversation didn't change my diagnosis, but it completely changed how I understood strength. I realized that vulnerability isn't weakness. Sometimes, it's the very thing that allows us to move forward.
While the events of the film are fictional, the emotions are deeply personal. Like Cicily, I found myself leaving a city that meant everything to me while trying to convince everyone that I was okay. As the story evolved with our director and writer, it became something larger than my own experience. Together, we explored the idea that support is never one-sided and that even the people who are always looking after others deserve to be cared for in return.
At its heart, The Line Between is about the invisible weight we all carry and the courage it takes to let someone help us carry it. We hope this film reminds audiences that asking for help doesn't diminish our strength—it creates space for the people who love us to show up for us.

OUR TEAM IS BUILT ON SISTERHOOD
Although The Line Between began with my personal experience, it became something much greater through collaboration.
When I first shared this story with our director, she immediately connected with the relationship between the two sisters. As an older sister herself, she understood the instinct to always be the protector and the quiet responsibility that often comes with that role. Together, we began exploring a question that transformed the film:
What happens when the person who is always strong finally needs someone else?
Our writer, Julia Kirton brought another deeply personal perspective. Living with heart disease, she understood the realities of navigating chronic illness and the invisible emotional weight it can place on both individuals and their families. Her insight helped ground the story in authenticity while expanding it beyond my own experiences.
Together, we discovered that The Line Between wasn't only about illness or leaving a place you love. It became a story about family, vulnerability, and the realization that support is never one-sided. Sometimes, younger siblings become caregivers. Sometimes, the people who have always carried everyone else deserve to be carried too.
By bringing together our different experiences, we created a film that we hope feels honest, compassionate, and universally relatable. While the details may be specific to our lives, the emotions belong to anyone who has ever struggled to let someone in.
The Subway as an Emotional Journey
Rather than simply being a setting, the subway becomes a physical representation of Cicily's emotional state. Each train car moves her deeper into memories she has spent years avoiding, forcing her to confront moments of fear, guilt, and love before she can move forward.
Settings she enters include: a grass field, a hospital room, and an intimate childhood bedroom. We plan to use VFX to transform Cicily into the train's spaces, straight into her memories.
Cicily and Angie are the core of our story, a showcase of pure love that is powerful enough to overcome fear of one's future.
We must reach 80% of our fundraising goal to receive the green light from Seed & Spark and access our funds. We have deep faith in this story and our team’s ability to bring it to life, but we can’t do it without your support.
In alignment with our wishlist, we are looking to raise $16,600 to raise minimum funds to push us across production and post-production costs!
The Line Between began as a deeply personal story, but it has grown into something created by an entire community of artists. As our Chapman University thesis film, we hope this project marks the beginning of its journey—not the end.
For producer Ryann Chalmers, The Line Between represents the fulfillment of an artistic promise she made to herself when she first began college: to graduate having created stories that felt deeply honest to who she is as a filmmaker and a person. Along the way, she found collaborators who shared that same passion for telling meaningful, emotionally driven stories.
Like many thesis films, The Line Between represents the culmination of years of artistic growth for our entire team. Each department has approached this project as an opportunity to create work that reflects the kind of filmmakers we hope to become. Together, we have poured our experiences, creativity, and care into building a film that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Following its completion, we plan to share The Line Between with audiences through the festival circuit, seeking festivals that champion emerging filmmakers, women-led stories, and emotionally resonant independent cinema. We hope the film reaches audiences who see themselves in Cicily and Angie, and who leave reminded that vulnerability can be a source of strength and that no one is meant to carry life's heaviest burdens alone.
If we're fortunate enough to exceed our fundraising goal, every additional contribution will go directly back into the film. Additional funding will allow us to further elevate our production design, refine our visual effects and post-production, better support our cast and crew, and expand our festival submissions so The Line Between can continue its journey beyond Chapman.

Producer & Co-Writer - Ryann Chalmers
Ryann Chalmers is a Freelance producer-writer and set decorator located in Long Beach, CA. She is a current student at Dodge College, studying Creative Producing with a Minor in Women and Gender Studies. With an interest in womanhood and identity, many of her films and screenplays center around introspective women-led stories that are showcased through a surrealist lens. Some of Ryann's credits include production coordination for K-Pop Group ENHYPEN and producing the 2025 feature film Virtuoso, which has won awards at the Chicano Hollywood Film Festival (Best Producer and Best Feature Film) and at the International Sound and Film Music Festival for Best Picture.
Director - Priyal Shah
Priyal Shah is a director from Seattle, WA, and based in Orange, CA. She began her filmmaking career as an editor, spending the past 9 years crafting narrative short films before making her directorial debut with Yes, No, Goodbye. Priyal is passionate about telling stories that help others feel seen, understood, and a little less alone. They’re often rooted in her own and her peers’ real-life experiences and celebrate the beauty and complexity of everyday life. Writer - Julia Kirton
Julia Kirton is a writer from Holyoke, Massachusetts and based in Anaheim, California. She is a Screenwriting major at Chapman University with a minor in Disability Studies. Growing up in a big family, many of Julia’s screenplays center not only about the importance of family, but also about disabilities and how they intertwine in family life. As one in four families in the U.S. includes a person with a disability, Julia sees these stories as vital to creating more authentic, inclusive, and representative storytelling.
Director of Photography - Steven Choi
Steven Choi is an LA-based commercial cinematographer, currently earning a degree in Film & Television Production at Chapman University. Raised in the Bay Area, Steven found an extreme interest in stop motion animation at a young age, sparking his life-long passion for storytelling and filmmaking. He posted his stop motion projects to YouTube for several years and garnered a small online following, until he decided to take a leap into the world of live action. Striving to study and master the divide between the technical and the emotional in storytelling, Steven works to make sure each project is better than the last, imbuing each image full of vibrant mirth. His philosophy towards each project is to produce a realistic image, but one that is romantically exaggerated-- for why else is it on screen?
Production Designer - Daniel Baron
Daniel Baron is a Production Designer from San Jose, California studying at Chapman University to earn a degree in Film and Television Production with an emphasis in Production Design. After building sets for theater productions for almost a decade, he found a love in telling stories in front of cameras as well. Since being at Chapman University, he has held the roles of production designer and art director numerous times as well as found a love for SFX Makeup and safety on sets. His favorite part of Production Design is collaborating with other passionate filmmakers to bring stories to life through his work and seeing the joy that it brings his team, himself, as well as the people who see themselves in the stories.
Editor - Alexander (Sasha) Golubchik
Sasha Golubchik is a Chicago-raised, Los Angeles-based editor and filmmaker studying Film and Television Production with an emphasis in Editing at Chapman University’s Dodge College. He has edited numerous narrative short films and has experience guiding projects through the entire filmmaking process, from script development and shot listing to editorial cuts, sound, color, visual effects, and final mastering. His professional experience includes working in post-production and editorial at A24, Cosmo Street, and PS260. Sasha is drawn to character-driven stories and the small, emotionally grounded moments that make people feel understood. Through editing, he hopes to create work that feels honest, intimate, and deeply connected to its characters. His work can be found at sashagolubchik.com.
VFX Supervisor - Mary Fisher
Mary Fisher is a VFX artist from Seattle, Washington. She fell in love with movies at a young age and has wanted to be a part of the filmmaking process ever since. Her passion for visual effects comes from a fascination with the limitless possibilities of bringing ideas to life on screen and expanding what can be achieved through filmmaking. She has served as a VFX supervisor on multiple Chapman University projects, helping bring a wide range of stories and creative visions to life. She now studies at Dodge College, where she continues to develop her skills and explore the art of visual effects. Mary feels fortunate to pursue a craft that combines her love of movies, creativity, and filmmaking.
VFX Supervisor - Zander Anestis
Zander Anestis is a VFX artist from Guilford, Connecticut. He has been interested in filmmaking and visual effects since before high school, and has co-directed numerous short films on which he also served as the VFX supervisor and sole VFX artist. His interest in visual effects is grounded in a strong passion for cinematography and the urge to go further beyond what is practically possible in the visual realm. He now studies at Dodge College, and has been the lead VFX compositor on multiple Dodge thesis films, most recently Through the Umbra. His work has also been featured in numerous other short films and music videos, thanks to his freelance gigs. He sees visual effects as one of the most freeing and powerful storytelling tools a filmmaker can employ, and feels very lucky to feel such a strong passion for the craft.
Sound Designer - Van Duong
Van Duong is an aspiring cinematic artist from Southern California pursuing her BFA and career in sound design for film and video games. Raised with a childhood full of books and video games, Van has always been interested in the sensory nature and texture of sound, thus she is grateful to be working with such a lovely community of filmmakers and creators at Chapman — and most importantly this film! As an older sister herself, she understands this story and can’t wait to work with the team to bring it to life.

He has been interested in filmmaking and visual effects since before high school, and has co-directed numerous short films on which he also served as the VFX supervisor and sole VFX artist. His interest in visual effects is grounded in a strong passion for cinematography and the urge to go further beyond what is practically possible in the visual realm. He now studies at Dodge College, and has been the lead VFX compositor on multiple Dodge thesis films, most recently Through the Umbra. His work has also been featured in numerous other short films and music videos, thanks to his freelance gigs. He sees visual effects as one of the most freeing and powerful storytelling tools a filmmaker can employ, and feels very lucky to feel such a strong passion for the craft.
Sound Designer - Van Duong
Van Duong is an aspiring cinematic artist from Southern California pursuing her BFA and career in sound design for film and video games. Raised with a childhood full of books and video games, Van has always been interested in the sensory nature and texture of sound, thus she is grateful to be working with such a lovely community of filmmakers and creators at Chapman — and most importantly this film! As an older sister herself, she understands this story and can’t wait to work with the team to bring it to life.
