Mission Statement

Our mission is to preserve the history of the Lumière Brothers’ factory for generations to look back on. This film will link modern-day cinema and photography to its earliest roots on the East Coast, and in a place you would least expect, Burlington, Vermont.

The Story

The Lumière Brothers are often credited as the founding fathers of cinema and the inventors of color photography. The brothers primarily conducted their work in Lyon, France. Up until recently, all of their factories were thought to have been torn down…

In 1991, environmental engineer, Hugo Martínez Cazón, was rummaging through microfilm fire insurance maps at The Vermont Legal Library and happened upon something unexpected: an insurance map detailing a Lumière factory in Burlington, Vermont!

Since then, Hugo has dedicated over thirty years of his life to researching the historical building, which he found to be the birthplace of the autochrome process in the Americas. Throughout this journey, we will meet others who are fascinated by Hugo's research, and one person in particular who found a significant piece of evidence at the factory's site.

What Hugo discovered has uncovered parts of history that were not just forgotten, but nearly lost forever. This documentary explores why the Lumière Brothers chose Vermont for their only factory outside Europe and highlights how important this factory was and still is today.

Director's Statement

As Hugo said to me on a phone call, " I don't want the history of this factory to be forgotten. It can't be forgotten." Hugo has dedicated almost half his life to researching this extraordinary building, and I am so honored to help tell his story.

For over a century, Burlington, along with the rest of the world, forgot about this historical landmark. The processes invented at this factory completely changed how we view color and, ultimately, Hollywood as we know it.

The autochrome plates produced by the Lumière North America Co. helped establish the National Park System and played a significant role in shaping the modern environmental movement. These are just some of the revelations we will explore in this film!

Pre-Production:

We began pre-production in February, which will conclude in September.

Production:

"The Lost Factory" will be filmed completely in Vermont over the course of 4 days this fall.

Post-Production:

Anything beyond our goal for this campaign will be allocated towards our post-production budget.

This money will go towards hiring a colorist, sound designer/mixer, editor, VFX, archival licenses, and festival fees!!!

Post-production will commence directly after production with the goal of completing the film in early spring of 2026. Just in time for festival runs! We might launch another crowdfunding campaign for post-production this fall, which will depend on the amount of funding we receive from grants.
