The Story

Two aspiring meme creators, similar to social media influencers, fulfill their goals when one of their memes becomes viral. A huge milestone for their social media pages and online visibility, they plan to expand on their viral meme with further remarkable content. Even though everything appears to be going well for them, they continue to endure negative reactions and criticism from their family and friends regarding their life's decisions. To make matters worse, the town's biggest meme creator, CHAwhonoe, hacks their social media pages and steals their content just as they are starting to achieve attraction with their social media pages. They confront CHAwhonoe, but things grow worse for them when CHAwhonoe turns the people against them. With people against them and criticism swirling around them, can these two young meme creators rise from the ashes and carve their way to the top of the meme industry?

My name is Aodhan, and I'm Australian film maker passionate for telling riveting and unique stories through film and television. 'The Meme Creators' will be the most ambitious project I've embarked on, with the goal of creating a visually humorous and engaging experience for the audience. Growing up in the expansive social media era, social media influencers and their content have a massive impact on our generation's values and beliefs, both positively and negatively. So I thought, why not use that as an analogy to "meme creators" to create a short film? It's a bizarre theme, but that's what makes it unique and exciting! My goal is to not only spotlight the impact memes have on our society in a comedic and engaging way, but to also encourage the importance of pursuing your dreams, no matter how absurd they seem to other people.

Memes are prevalent in today's environment, both virtually and in person. One thing is certain: the modest meme is not to be taken lightly. Beneath their uncomplicated surface, they hide depth and culture. Memes are powerful tools for digital activism, communication, and belonging that, depending on our interactions with them and our identities, can bring people together or drive them apart. This film will tackle this timely topic from the viewpoint of its bizarre, distinctive characters, and explore the challenges and cross-roads people face in their pursuit to "non-realistic" goals and careers. It will also present a unique meme style that we are not used to seeing to hopefully raise a positive awareness and approach to memes with our online interactions and thinking.

The approach for this short is motivated by visual comedic elements within the playground of the frame. In order to bring the audience on this visual comedic and determined journey of our two protagonists, we will be exploring a quicker pace with lighter tones, and experimenting with creative transitions and synchronized action with music to incite humor and communicate a lot more through a lot less.
This style and approach is inspired by the filmmaking styles of comedy-drama (dramedy) filmmakers Edgar Wright and Taika Waititi, who have both established themselves as top comedic contemporary directors.

Shooting will begin late April 2024 in Vancouver, BC, Canada, with the plan for the film to hit festivals by the end of 2024 to the start of 2025. The plan after production also consists of using this short film as a pitch package for a Web Series/Episodic series further down the line.
The full budget for this short film will be $8000 for 2 days of shooting. We have a full day of shooting in a house situated in Burnaby that will feature fast paced action montages and quick cuts as well as other fun camera movements and shots. There will also be shooting at a cafe with over 12 extras, along with filming a locker and red carpet scene.
We hope to raise $6000 through our Seed&Spark campaign with a flex goal of $8000, and we already have $2000 locked down. Our budget will go towards hiring some of the industry's top professionals to head each department of the film along with production design, props, catering for each day of shooting, equipment rentals, insurances and locations.
Creating a film is a challenging but fun process! And, your contributions, big or small, will go a long way to make sure we are equipped with the best tools, equipment and locations to efficiently and safely do our best work.

Sharing our campaign on your social media is as helpful as a donation. And doing BOTH goes a long way to helping bring 'THE MEME CREATORS' to life!
