The New Frontier is a short film that explores and honors people of color's histories and contributions to our country specifically from 1860-1895 a.k.a. the Old West. By subverting tropes and reclaiming classic American symbolism we hope to highlight the badass heroes we needed as kids.

The Story
This isn't your Grandpa's TLC Western Rerun. This is something you've never seen before. Add a splash of historical accuracy with violence, beauty, and anger. We're here to reclaim the Old Western as our own.
The New Frontier is a short film that explores and honors people of color's histories and contributions to our country specifically from 1860-1895 a.k.a. the Old West. By subverting tropes and reclaiming classic American symbolism (i.e. Cowboys, Soldiers, and Witches) we hope to highlight the many pieces of our history that have been left out school textbooks. While crafting the idea our team decided that we in no way would we rely on trauma tourism (slavery, rape, genocide, ect), stereotypes/tropes (dirty banditos, the noble savage), or white saviors.
The short film is told in visual vignettes with overlying narrative stanzas written and narrated by local artists of color. Here are a few of the many stories this film will feature:
-The 200 Muslim soldiers who served in the Civil War
-The forced sterilization of black women and their distrust of traditional western medicine
-Native American children who have been separated from their families and breaking free from missionary boarding schools
-A Mexican Charra skilled in horse dancing takes her revenge upon crooked lawmen
-Chinese railroad workers left out of the meeting of the transcontinental railroad
- A Black cowboy learning cattle herding and horseback riding from his father throughout the west
We are in the midst of Production and NEED YOUR HELP TO FINISH! Costumes, Locations, and Craft Services are expensive! Your donation can be a big help in making this amazing film happen!
Our film project is led and directed by a Hapa woman, Kanani Koster and her A.D. Jocelyn Galindo, a Yakima Latina SFX artist. Most filming days have been seen both a majority in people of color and women on set. Filming will take place all over Washington state as far as Yakima to Vancouver, WA.
