Mission Statement

As a storyteller, I am passionate about crafting stories that keep my audience thinking and feeling long after they finish watching. I want them to relate and resonate deeply with the characters, and in turn look at life through a lens they perhaps hadn't been able to before.

The Story

What is the power of a moment?

For seventy year old Arthur Hudson, it is everything.

For decades, Arthur and his wife Elaine have lived on the outskirts of their small town, isolated from the rest of the world. Owner of the only drive-in theater in town, Arthur closed its doors years ago, when his wife was diagnosed with dementia.

As the years have gone on, he has witnessed the slow loss of his true love, to the point where she no longer has any recollection of who he is.

That is, except for one moment.

Since he was a young boy, Arthur's life has revolved almost entirely around the drive-in theater. It was where he got his first job, it was where he and Elaine went on their first date. And now, it is the last thread allowing him to hold on to his past. Because, as he has discovered, every night, when he brings his wife to the abandoned drive-in, and they watch the same film that played on their first date all those years ago...

... she remembers.

If only for the briefest of moments.

But for him, it is an eternity.

"The Projectionist" chronicles the simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking story of Arthur's life, from a young boy at his first job, to meeting his soulmate, to a weathered old man trying desperately to keep his grip on the past and eventually being faced with the reality that he may finally have to let it go.

From the get-go, I knew that this was going to be an ambitious project. Not only is the film a period piece, taking place primarily in the 1960s, but the central location is a drive-in theater, which in and of itself is a much greater undertaking than the scope of many short films.

With a story and script as demanding as ours, there is very little margin between what we want for the project, and what we actually need in order to believably and authentically pull it off.

One such element is the drive-in theater itself. We have been fortunate enough to find a spectacular 1950s drive-in in Central Texas, where much of the authentic 50s and 60s elements are still in tact and preserved. We will be filming the majority of the film on location, and I am thrilled by the level of authenticity and detail this will bring to the project.

In our story, we see this drive-in at two very different eras. We see it in its prime in the sixties, as well as in the present day, when it has been abandoned for nearly a decade. As such, a large amount of our resources will be put towards the art department, from wardrobe and hair to set design and props.

THE TEAM

Having recently completed four years of film school at UCLA, one thing I did not want was for this project to be a "student film". I learned alot during my time in school and am extremely excited to use my set of both new and honed skills to make something great, but I know how much I still have to learn, and I want the people surrounding me and working alongside me on this film to know their specific role inside and out so that I may learn from them as we work together on this project.

I am thrilled by the amount of talent we have on board, from our exceptional actors, to our incredible producer and cinematographer, to our experienced and insightful crew. With these talented and passionate individuals on my team, I have complete confidence that my vision for this film will not only successfully be translated from the pages of the script to the images on the screen, but will come to life in ways that bring more emotion, character, and meaning to the finished film than I ever could have imagined.

 GABE MAYHAN

Cinematographer

Throughout his career as a cinematographer, Gabe Mayhan has approached each project with excitement, collaborative spirit and an innovative technique. Gabe has created a diverse body of work in the genres of indie films, short films, documentary, commercial and TV programming.

Having grown up hearing his parent's stories of their small town upbringings, he grew up romanticizing the time period the film takes place in. As such, he was immediately drawn to the project, and is the perfect fit for being able to accurately and authentically capture the tone, feel, and aesthetic that are foundational to the film's narrative.
