The Red Shoe follows two Jewish friends as they flee their hometown during the Nazi invasion. The last generation of Holocaust survivors is now dying; it's my mission as a third-generation survivor to tell the story of my family's history. Silence is not an option. "Never again" is Now.

Mission Statement

My mission is to spread awareness of the atrocities, feature women's experiences, and honor the resilience of the Jewish people. This script is written to remind us that the victims of the Holocaust were real people who had joyful pasts and whose futures were ripped away, less than 100 years ago.

The Story

As Nazis invade their hometown, teenagers Fanye and Rivkah are sent on a journey to America by their parents. Before they are able to escape their town, they are nearly captured and are forced to run into a nearby forest for cover. An unfortunate injury slows them down even further. Frozen in silence, as they await their fate, their past and imagined futures flash before them. Ultimately, one of them makes a drastic decision that changes the outcome for them both.

WRITER'S STATEMENT

"My grandmother Fani Schaeffer and my grandfather Baruch Jampel (pictured below, shortly after liberation) were two of the ~40 Jews from Bolochov to survive. Fani fled Poland with her best friend and got captured in the woods. She was sent to work on a labor camp and then later, on a private labor farm for a catholic family. I don't know how she was captured but after learning that my grandmother had a premonition that she would lose her favorite pair of red shoes while running in the woods (which came true), I began writing this story.

My grandmother passed away when I was six; all of the information I have from her is told to me via my mother, who wasn't told much. My mother visited Fani's hometown in 2019 and got to walk into the synagogue that my grandma and her father attended. Seeing the photos from her trip lead me to research the town further. There are so many stories to tell. This short film focuses on the experience of two young Jewish women, a point of view not often featured.

Sharing my grandmother's story is my duty. I am alive because of her and I will do everything in my power and use my art to keep future generations of Jews alive."

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT:

"...The Red Shoe is not only a film about a harrowing yet important event in our world’s history, but it’s also a film about unbelievable courage, sacrifice, and love. In a world where hate for the “other” is increasing at an alarming rate, and history is actually being questioned, it is important for us to revisit the past, no matter how painful, to not only honor those who sacrificed their lives for future generations but to also educate and inform so that these tragic events never happen again. As the director of The Red Shoe, I look forward to contributing to this important conversation about the exceptional strength and perseverance of the Jewish people in the face of evil, and that this history continues to be told."

SCRIPT ACCOLADES:

MAKING THE FILM

If you've been following us on social media you'll know that this film has been in the works for a while! Lorrel and I have worked since 2020 to finalize our script. After various developmental readings and gaining initial financial support from a private reading, we are now turning to Seed&Spark to reach our budget goal! This is a period piece with violence, blood, and weaponry so we need to hire many professionals to make sure the set is safe and the story is told authentically.

We aim to shoot the film in early Fall and look forward to keeping you posted on production and post-production here and on social media!
