The Story
When our lives no longer feel like our own, how do we decide what truly matters? This is New York City, 2035. Our attention has been so hijacked that we hardly even notice the ruin and destruction around us, but walk around like barely alive zombies. Jackie can't escape the still small voice inside her, warning her about something. What? She is restless. Where is that still small voice inside coming from? Who is calling? Forced to confront the forces of Resistance, she searches to end the war within herself and ventures into the unknown.
Jackie is a distillation of my own story. I used to feel that I had very little control over the direction of my life. As I was working through The Artist's Way for the second or third time in the early stages of the pandemic, the idea for this film crashed in on me. I had to go ahead and begin living the life I dreamed of. I received my "marching orders " to write this short film and produce it. Over the next few years, I proceeded to make repeated Artistic U-turns until I found myself back where I started. I realized there was nothing left to do but pick up the pen and write. I had to trust myself to find the words. I had to take back my power. Of course I continue to face my demons: of addiction, of comfort and convenience; of my own ego telling me that my ideas don’t matter and that I don’t matter. Through self-discovery and determination, I became someone who created a life I love.
Our culture makes us believe that we are powerless and that our creativity isn’t valued. There is resistance when it comes to pursuing a career in the arts. A resistance that feels supernatural. Creatives are told to prioritize a sure thing; the hourly wage job with health insurance and paid time off. We are told to fall in line and that our true calling is secondary. But a sure thing isn’t more important than pursuing meaning in life. And I know now, and I have to continue to believe, that when I step out in faith, my community will lift me up, and all the boats will rise.
The Scent of Water is currently in pre-production and the funds we are raising will go directly towards basic production costs and paying the highly skilled professionals who will help me bring my vision to life. As independent artists, we need your support now more than ever. I hope you will consider joining me in this journey.
Thank you so much for your time and interest in our project.
