The Story
The Slicks begins with Kurt and Mark, two young short story writers. Kurt is on the phone with their boss, who notifies them that their deadline is tomorrow morning, and without an idea, they will lose their jobs. With high stakes established, Kurt and Mark begin to argue over their goals and ambitions; Mark argues the two should stick to their tried-and-true stories for tomorrow's deadline, but Kurt wants more than to be a lowly pulp writer.
The two wait for inspiration to strike and it does in the form of a couple arguing next door. Kurt and Mark decide to base their new story on the couple's real problems. After the bickering through the wall subsides, the pair struggle to construct a definitive ending. We hope you will tune in to find out if Kurt and Mark finish their story…
As a young filmmaker, I’ve felt the both collaborative and competitive nature of trying to gain recognition. Some people persevere, but many fall behind, and others do what they believe is necessary to accomplish their goals, even if it means undermining their peers. The Slicks investigates this balance between ambition and integrity. I wanted to further explore my experience with writing and the irrational desperation that can accompany a deadline; by centering this film around two writers I am able to feature different philosophies.
An additional aspect of my directorial approach is my wanting the audience to understand and empathize with our characters. While viewers may disagree with Kurt and Mark’s methods, I believe that viewers will understand their motivations when taking drastic actions.
The combination of high stakes, suspenseful plots, and humorous circumstances will create a tone of being tense yet fun.
Our goal for the style of The Slicks is to create a heightened inner reality. Everybody shares the same exterior world, but not the same internal experience. The goal of The Slicks’ style will be to build a realistic world and then capture subjective experiences within it.
High and Low for its direction, blocking, and staging.
After hours for its tense yet fun tone and energetic style.
Ace in the Hole for a character study of our duo-- writers exploiting others for personal gain.
Rear Window for its use of suspense, camera angles, and themes of privacy invasion.
Our goal for this fundraiser is to raise $3,500 to cover the remainder of our budget.
The total budget for the Slicks is $9,800. Our team has already secured $6,300.
Our most significant expenses combined are travel, food, and location because it is important that we supply our cast and crew with ideal conditions during production.
The timeline of The Slicks is as follows. The team has been in pre-production since August of 2023 and will continue until April 2024.
Principal photography will take place over four days, where we will be shooting at our singular location in New Jersey. All interiors, no overnight shoots.
Post-production will take over five months to complete. Picture lock will happen in June 2024. Following picture lock color and sound will be complete at the end of August with a projected finish line of September 2024. Distribution to film festivals will occur from September 2024 till August 2025.
Above are stills taken from my latest film An After Party which was shot in April 2023 and finalized in September 2023. This is the film where I met and worked alongside Juliette Ho and Stefan Thompson. I am proud of the cast and crew for how efficiently we worked and how effective the final product is. With our gained resources provided by NYU and our incredible financial backers, we are confident that The Slicks will not only meet the level of quality of An After Party but exceed it.

About This Team
TUCKER PAPA - Writer & Director
A senior at NYU Tisch majoring in Film and Television and minoring in Philosophy. Tucker Papa plans to continue his work in the Film and TV industry concentrating in Directing, Editing, and Assistant Directing. The themes I come back to time and time again in my work are truth, lies, and trust.
JULIETTE HO - Dir. Photography
Hong Kong born and raised cinematographer and colorist specialized in short-form filmmaking with a belief: through the camera lens, humans can be understood in ways that language itself cannot convey. A Co-Director of Fusion Film Festival who aimed to promote female and underrepresented gendered voices, and uses her craft to explore nuances and complexities of human conditions.
KAIA SANTOS - Production Designer
Born and raised in San Diego, California, relocating to New York City in 2018. A storyteller since childhood, she pursued a BFA in Film and Television from NYU and a minor in Philosophy, graduating class of 2022. She harnesses her passion for filmmaking working freelance as a Production Designer and Director, Kaia brings a philosophy to storytelling that aims to understand the world around her and her place in it.
STEFAN THOMPSON - Composer
Stefan Thompson studied at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious Harry Moore Award from the Lyford Cay Foundation in the Bahamas, as well as grants from the Charitable Arts Foundation and Nassau Music Society, for his outstanding work as an artist. In 2022, Stefan had an orchestral work entitled NDE: Impressions of a Near Death Experience performed by the Boston Conservatory Orchestra at Symphony Hall in Boston. Stefan began his Ph.D. studies in Screen Scoring at New York University in September 2022.
AMRUT AYYALA - Producer
NYC and LA-based filmmaker and musician who graduated UGFTV Class of 2023 with a minor in Cinema Studies. Amrut’s production company “a dumb video” was founded in 2017 with a mission of only making projects with his coolest of friends. He specialized at Tisch in sound mixing, acting, and writing, and has since been producing music videos and NYU Thesis projects while coordinating and managing musical acts “The Library Fund”, “Founders”, and “super senior”.
ALEXEI CLARKE - Producer
NYC-based Canadian-British narrative and documentary film producer currently pursuing a degree in Film & TV with a BEMT minor from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Previously worked at Sony, Paramount, and Fox––most recently on Transformers 7. He’s directed and produced documentaries and music videos, including multiple intermediate and advanced narratives. He’s won awards at several festivals like the London Independent Film Awards and the SPLICE International Film Festival.
