We all tend to base our identity on the idea of home, whether that's a place or a person. "The Space Between" is a bittersweet story revealing that "home" is nothing but a fleeting concept. We hope to provide comfort to those who have faced that same realization.

Mission Statement

The American Dream. Fake? Obviously. But I did make New York my home, and I am terrified of losing it. There is a feeling I cannot name, but I see it in people all the time. Immigrants, lovers, parents, friends - we all cling to something outside ourselves. I want my film to name that feeling.

The Story

LOGLINE:

Two friends in New York City try to discover the events of the night before in time for one of them to catch a flight back to her home country.

SYNOPSIS:

We begin at a typical New York City college party, at the same time establishing everything Zuza, our protagonist, is supposed to leave behind the very next day...

Now, after A LOT of alcohol (and who knows what else), two best friends Zuza and Jo end up hooking up. For the first time ever.

And while it would be great to address that issue when they wake up - a bigger problem arises.

Zuza’s bag is gone.

Not that much of a big deal, unless your passport was in it, and the flight you’re supposed to take to your home country before your student visa expires is TONIGHT.

The girls have 6 hours for Zuza to make it to the airport.

Seems impossible, but turns out much easier than actually talking about their feelings...

But as the story unfolds so does the relationship. In the end Jo confesses her feelings for Zuza, and in a desperate attempt to keep her around she offers to marry her for a green card.

Zuza has to choose whether to go back to Poland and let go of the American Dream, or take advantage of her best friend’s offer, when in fact she doesn’t feel the same way.

From Writer and Director Nadia Fortini:

My story is called “The Space Between”.

The title comes from a song an amazing girl wrote for me this summer... The exact lyrics are, “Let’s linger in the space between friends and lovers”.

I broke her heart, I think. She knew it wasn't the right time for us, but nonetheless, she continued to cling to me with everything she had.

It’s sad, right?

But it made me realise that I’ve been doing the exact same thing - only I’ve been clinging to a place.

New York City.

America.

The American Dream.

With my graduation date approaching, the fear of losing what I considered a home grows. That's just as pathetic, right? It’s just a place. I existed before this and I’ll exist after it. It’s not a live or die situation.

And yet it feels like it.

This strange feeling is exactly what I want to explore within my story.

WORKING DURING THE TIME OF COVID:

Working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has not only affected all of us, but also our ability to plan our production in a way that ideally, we would've liked to. Of course, there are several safety and health restrictions, regulations, and overall precautions that we will follow, according to New York City's guidelines, as well as the guidelines of Tisch and NYU. The overall health and wellbeing of our team is our main priority, and will ultimately contribute to a much smoother production process and experience for everyone!

Why now? Why this story?

We find it important to tell this story now, and feel a particular urgency to do so, because of its relatbility and impact. The Space Between highlights a lot of nuances that are unknown to most American viewers, including the difficulties that international students face studying in the US, and the struggles that they undergo by attempting to maintain lives in more than one place. We feel compelled to highlight on this now as this is a struggle that many of our team members are currently facing as international students, especially in the time of the pandemic. Anxieties and questions revolving around, Can I stay here after I graduate? Will I be kicked out or deported?, and even the classic, Should I just marry one of my American friends to get a green card?, are all intricacies that hold a partiuclar weight and can be shared by many. It is imperative to us that we are able to share and portray the somewhat specific, yet very real nuances that many immigrants or alien-status individuals may experience, especially here in the US, as their struggles are often overlooked. The strong factor of comedic relief that this film will provide is also a compelling aspect of why we plan on creating The Space Between now, because, well, we believe that stories with humour and a lightness to them can often hit much deeper!

Current stage:

Right now, we're deep in the stages of pre-production! We're rapidly expanding our team, which largely consists of female-identifying individuals and international students, and locking in plans to prepare for production. We aim to continue moving forward in the near future by developing our plans for casting, social media expansion and outreach, creating a supportive community with our viewers, backers, and team members, and by focusing on the campaign! If you'd like to get more involved, please consider following us on our social media platforms, and donating!

Plans for the future!

Regarding post-production, our film will be submitted to many festivals, and distributed through the help of NYU. We hope to expand it beyond our community though, and establish its presence in the respective home countries of our team members-- Poland, Brazil, The Netherlands, and Russia, to name a few! We plan on making the film widely accessible to our audience, especially to those who were involved in the process.

How can I get involved?

We hope that you consider donating to our campaign: even a small sum of $5 or $10 will bring a huge difference to our goal and our ability to bring the story to life. Also, we ask for you to share our campaign with family, friends, and those around you! We're very communicative and active on our social media pages, so feel free to reach out and share our content, so it reaches a wider audience.

SPREAD THE WORD.

Donate or share. Or both!

We thank you for your generosity and time, we really appreciate those who continue to interact and believe in us.

Lots of love,

The Space Between Crew

About This Team

The Space Between's team, to simply put it, is an all-female international powerhouse.

All crew positions are filled by creatively driven individuals from all over the world. It was imperative for Nadia (writer/director of "The Space Between") to work with a diverse, international crew that could resonate with the intricacies of this story in all stages of development.

Our team hopes to shed light on the struggles of international students in the US through this highly-stylized, bittersweet, and humorous portrait.
