The Story
I’d been trying to come up with a new short film to write and direct for the longest time but nothing was panning out. I’d written a few scripts featuring my usual dark, twisted subject matter - one was about a woman experiencing a gradually changing timeline, the other was about a guy who woke up from what he thinks was a drunk hookup with a friend of his, only to gradually regain his memory and realize he was raped but - but I couldn’t seem to iron them out.

I thought I might as well try something a little different and make a story about a polyamory. I had been involved with LA polyamory community for a few years and I had a wealth of experiences and stories to drawn on from. Essentially I decided to do something I’d never done before: a romantic comedy albeit with post-modern relationship.

I submitted my script to a Writer’s Group, who I can’t compliment enough when it comes to giving feedback. A key suggestion was instead of doing having a male and two female arrangement, swapping the genders - definitely a good idea. One area I struggled with was the location. I had written a story that could be produced relatively cheaply. Hence, it took place in an apartment, which any fan of indie low-budget short films know is an annoyingly overused setting. That’s where the fantasy geek component came in - a flat is much more interesting when it’s covered with Dungeons and Dragons posters and Tolkienesque action figures. Besides, a number of polyamorous people I know are into role playing games and geek culture.

Countless drafts later, here we are! I think back about what made me want to pursue this project and what really appealed to me. After all, like I said, it doesn’t feature murder, cannibalism, or occult sex rituals like most of my other projects. Looking back, I think what I most like about it is the tense uncertainty that comes with any romantic relationship. No matter how well you get to know your partner(s) you’re never entirely sure what they might be thinking. Do he still love me? Does she still find me attractive? Were they really with their friends last night? A key component to making polyamory work - something which monogamous culture could really learn from - is open communication. I wanted to show that struggle.
