Our western culture has very specific expectations of the genders, particularly women in how they should look and act. What happens when a woman who is socially considered "masculine" pushes against society's standards? The Grey Area shines a light on the unobserved effects of gender stereotyping.

Mission Statement

Aside from the film’s two gay co-directors and an androgynous lesbian main subject, the documentary explores themes of equality relevant to all women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The film’s diverse crew consists of women, POC, and LGBTQ+ filmmakers.

The Story

The Grey Area seeks to raise at least $20,000 for Post-Production and Distribution with a goal to fund beyond this initial amount.  Further funding would allow all expenses to be covered comfortably.

Through the illuminating viewpoint of main subject and co-director, Keagan Anfuso, The Grey Area provides an intimate perspective on being a woman who is socially considered masculine.

Anfuso‘s narrative denotes that amidst the social progress, our society is still struggling to break binary mindsets that continue to place limiting expectations on women.

At a time when gender identity and equality is a heated social debate, The Grey Area poses the idea that the lingering existence of antiquated gender stereotypes are responsible for oppressing the natural and distinct character of many individuals.

Anfuso is only one of the millions of women still experiencing the effects of those stereotypes.

With her athletic build, naturally raspy voice and androgynous fashion preference, Keagan Anfuso is often assumed to be male or male-identified. Neither of which are true. To the surprise of many, Anfuso proudly identifies as female and has always used she/her pronouns.

After 20 years of having her gender identity misunderstood, Anfuso‘s most challenging obstacle has been convincing others that she is comfortable in her assigned-at-birth gender. She believes that to make progress in an overwhelming climate, we need to build a communicative bridge of relatability with those struggling to understand.

Offering herself as an example, her intention is to point out the stifling effects that gender stereotyping can have on children and follow into adulthood.
